Television Screenwriter, Producer, Animal Activist. He will be best remembered for co-creating the long-running animated TV series "The Simpsons" (beginning in 1989). Raised in Beverly Hills, his father was a clothing manufacturer, his mother was the proprietor of an art gallery, and Sam followed his mother's interest in art and took up illustrating. He studied at Stanford University, and after graduation, he landed a position with the television production company Filmation. Simon would go on to make a name for himself in television as a producer and writer for the programs "Taxi," "Cheers," "The Tracey Ullman Show," and "The Garry Shandling Show." Along with Matt Groening and James L. Brooks, Simon developed "The Simpsons," which first appeared on "The Tracey Ullman Show." He received several Emmy Awards and nominations during the course of his career. In 2002, he established the Sam Simon Foundation, which rescued animals from shelters and provided service dogs to U.S. military veterans. In addition, he was a major contributor to PETA. He died from colon cancer.
