    Charles Dickens was born in 1812 near Portsmouth where his father was a clerk in the navy pay office. The family moved to London in 1823, but their fortunes were severely impaired. Dickens was sent to work in a blacking-warehouse when his father was imprisoned for debt. Both experiences deeply affected the future novelist. In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines, and in 1836 started the serial publication of Pickwick Papers. Thereafter, Dickens published his major novels over the course of the next twenty years, from Nicholas Nickleby to Little Dorrit. He also edited the journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Dickens died in June 1870.

    若い頃に手に取って、よく分からず興味も持てず、すぐに投げました。

    近年、フランス史や西欧史に関心が持てるようになり、様々な読書を経験した後に再び本書を手に取りました。

    なんと味わい深い文体か。

    ジャーナリストとしてのキャリアを反映した、儚くもしぶとく生きようとする生命の躍動、殺伐としながらも色鮮やかに描きだされる風景と歴史、計算されたプロットで導火線に誘う革命の気配。

    ヒリヒリするような緊張感を維持した作品で、これがディケンズなのかと思い知らされた気がしました。

    ノンフィクションや歴史に関する本が好きで、古典文学作品は普段あまり読みませんが、改めなくてはいけないような気持ちになりました。

    横着せずに本屋に足を運び冒頭の２〜3ページを読み比べて下さい。

    取り敢えず新潮社版等と読み比べて下さい。

    それで、大体わかります。

    池 央耿氏の新訳はそれ程明確に素晴らしい。

    他の翻訳に比べ格段に日本語の文章として格調高く流麗でいて読みやすく会話も自然。

    だからこそより面白くディケンズの世界に浸れます。

    以前、二都物語を読んだとき、あっという間に読み終わった記憶だったので、読んでから大分時間がたったこともあり、内容も忘れてきたので、読み返そうと思って購入しました。

    あっという間というのが記憶違いだったのか、翻訳のせいなのかわかりませんが、読んでも楽しくなく、むしろ、読み進めるのが苦になってしまいました。

    高校生のころ興奮して一気に読んだことが懐かしくまた手に取りました。冒頭のシーンからよく出来た映画の世界に引き込まれたように、目まぐるしく変わる場面から抜け出せません。クランチャーのせがれが「父ちゃんの手は何でいつも鉄の錆の匂いがする？」っていう疑問までが、全体の物語を織りなす糸になっているあたりの仕掛けのうまさもディケンズらしさだと思います。どんどん暗くなっていく革命前夜の雰囲気の中で、一筋の陽光のように明るいマネット父娘にも影が差し掛かります。

    　時は1775年。銀行員のジャーヴィス・ロリーは郵便馬車の乗客であった。それを追いかけて伝令がやってきて、「ドーヴァーで娘子（マドモアゼル）を待たれよ」と伝える。かつて赤子のときにフランスからイギリスへと連れてきた身寄りのない娘ルーシー・マネットの来訪を告げる言伝だった。だが死んだはずの父であるマネット医師が実はパリの牢獄から解放されていると知り、ルーシーとロリーのふたりは医師を迎えにフランスへ渡る……。

    　こうして18世紀末のロンドンとパリ、ふたつの都をめぐる物語が始まります。

    　わたしが今から40年以上も前の学生時代に読んだのは中野好夫訳の『二都物語』。当時は18世紀末のフランス事情もよくわかっておらず、このディケンズ文学を十全に理解できたとはいいがたいところです。

    　再度この小説を手にしたのは、翻訳がわたしの崇敬する池央耿氏による新訳版だからです。

    「最良の時代にして、最悪の時代だった。知恵の時代であって、愚昧の時代だった。確信の時代ながら、懐疑の時代だった。清明の季節でありつつも、雲霧の季節、希望の春にして絶望の冬だった」（９頁）

    　このおなじみの書き出しで開幕する物語は池氏の高雅にして流麗、言葉を換えるなら、硬質で歯ごたえがありすぎるものになっています。わたしはその和文をゆっくりじっくり味わう歓びを享受しているところですが、おそらく40年前の無知蒙昧の学徒だったわたしには、とても読みこなせなかったでしょう。年は重ねてみるものです。

    「死を前にして、人はある時、久しく慣れ親しんだ愛読書のページを繰ることもできなくなり、いつかまた全編を読破したいと空しく思う」（23頁）この言葉に苦笑もしました。

    　さて物語は、ロンドンではルーシーとチャールズの婚儀で一区切りをつけ、一方パリでは権勢を振るう大公ら貴族階級に対してルサンチマンを募らせる革命勢力が力をためつつあります。

    　急ぎこのまま、下巻へと進もうと思います。
