    これが無料で読めてしまうのがすごい。

    鎖国時代のチベットの様子から過酷なサバイバル旅まで詳しく描かれていて読み応え抜群です。

    チベットやチベット人に関してはボロクソ書かれており、クズだの野蛮だの言われていてとても笑えるのですが、当時の時代特有の偏った見方による誤解や誇張もあると考えられ、要検証です。

    ただ、これを読んでチベット独立は難しいんじゃないかなぁと個人的に思ってしまいました。

    現在のチベットは中国に支配されており、可哀そうな地域であり人たちであるという認識と、ダライラマという偉い坊さんが居るということと、ジャイアントパンダの生息地であるというふわっとした知識しかない状態でした。ですから明治時代のチベット旅行記であることから、純朴で仏教に対する信仰心の篤い人たちに関することが読めるだろうと思いつつ本書を読み始めました。

    　しかし読破してみて思うことは、チベット人たちの社会は当時のシナ（原文ママの表記）以上に賄賂が横行する社会であり、シナが日本に日清戦争にて敗れた後はシナを頼りにならぬ国と侮り、仏教国であるチベットとは宗教を異にする英領インドに対抗する為に、露西亜が理想の仏教国であると騙されてロシア帝国に近づこうとするという自主独立の気風が感じられない国家でした。

    　また仏教そのものも、真面目に信仰し修行する僧もいましたが、それはごく一部であり、僧になると税金を払わなくてもよくなるという前提があるので、大半の僧は税金を払うのが嫌で僧になった者が主であるという事実も語られていました。そして西洋的な合理主義の考え方は一切受け入れられず、迷信がはびこる社会でもありました。

    　イメージの中にあった純朴で信仰心が篤いチベット人たちという幻想は完全に破壊されてしまいましたが、それでも本書を読んでいて清涼感を感じられたのは、著者であり禅宗の僧でもある河口慧海さんが真摯に仏教を信じており、その教えの通りに行動し続けようとしているその姿勢に感動するからであります。

    　この本は当時のチベットを知るに最適な本でありますが、河口慧海という一人の日本人僧の冒険記という意味付けで読むのが適しているのかもしれません。

    　チベット旅行記というよりも、【日本人僧、河口慧海の魔境チベット冒険記】という感じで読みました。読み終えるのにかなりの日数がかかりましたが、非常に興味深く読み続けることが出来ました。
