Lady Day: the Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia 1933-1944

信じられないような１０枚です。

　古いので音質は良くないですが、１９３３−１９４４ですからね。

１９３３年でビリー・ホリデイ１８歳ですかあ。

ベニー・グッドマンがバックですかあ。（笑）

　晩年の苦しいような声ではなく、

「これからよ！」と言ってるような歌声に元気をもらえます。

演奏ももちろんすばらしい。

とてもお買い得でした。

曲も歌声も癒されます。

この時代のおしゃれな雰囲気が伝わってきます。

どちらかといえば、後半のLPを聞いてきたので、この時代のビリー・ホリデイがこんなに良いなんて知らなかった。

晩年のビリーホリデイは寂しげなイメージが強いですが、ここでの彼女は気力・体力ともに十分といった感じでスイングする曲では思いきりスイングし、スローな曲では情感豊かに歌い上げています。

ルイ・アームストロングやベッシー・スミスからの強い影響を感じさせる最初期のエモーションたっぷりながらもまだまだ荒々しい歌唱から、レスター・ヤングらとともに影響しあい次第に洗練され自己のスタイルを確立していくビリーの様子はかなり聞き物です。

また演奏者たちも当時最高のミュージシャン達を集めてきたような素晴らしいメンバーばかりで、これだけ凄いとお互いのエゴがぶつかりあってまとまりのない演奏になりがちなのですが、ここではビリーの歌をしっかり立てつつ自分の個性を出すという素晴らしい職人芸を見せてくれています。なのでトランペット、サックス、クラリネットなどいずれを聞いても凄い演奏なのに全体として見事にブレンドされているという奇跡的な演奏となっています（何回聞いてもほんとに飽きない）。

これらの歴史的名演奏が１０枚組でこのくらいの値段で買えるなんてうれしい限り！リマスター加減もとてもよく古い時代の演奏がリアルに響いて心地よいです。

黒人差別が公にされていたこの時代も決して白人に媚びることは無かったという気合の入ったビリー・ホリデイの魂の歌をぜひ聞いてみて下さい！！

ビリーホリデー、一番良い時代の録音だと思います。当時のサイドマンの演奏もすばらしく何も言う事ありません。

ビリー・ホリデイの最初期の歌声、作品が聞ける。これらの歌の上手さ、甘さはたった今聞いていて充分楽しめる。古いレコードのコレクションからデジタライズされたものであるが、古い音源であることを感じさせない。

ビリー・ホリデイは奇妙な果実が有名だが、普通に可愛らしいjazzも歌っており、これがまた上手くて、これらがあっての奇妙な果実であることが分かる。アフリカ系アメリカ人の公民権運動の先駆的テーマを持つとされる奇妙な果実で、彼女の音楽性を語るのは気の毒であり、それはこのボックスセットを聞けば良く分かる。

スリリングにjazzを歌いこなす歌唱力はただただ感嘆するばかりで、jazzの歌の楽しみを堪能出来ること請け合いである。ただ歌声を楽しむ。そういう聞き方をしたい方にお勧めなセットである。

　海外の業者から、新品の商品を買ったところ、disc5の紙スリーブがdisc3の紙スリーブになっていました。即ち、dics3の紙スリーブが２枚、disc5の紙スリーブがナシ、ということです。盤は大丈夫でした。出品者には「紙スリーブを送り直してくれ」と申し出たのですが、どうやら、あれやこれやで送料３５０円の返却ということで、事態は収束しそうです。なんだか釈然としません。新品を購入したので、あまり、出品者を責める気にもなれません。責任は製作会社のソニーミュージックにあります。価格も比較的廉価なので、こうした失態はこの手の簡便なボックス・セットには珍しくないのかもしれませんが・・・。

　この商品の購入を考えている方は、入手したら、必ず、盤と紙スリーブをチェックすることをお薦めします。以前、日本で発売された大和明さんが監修した８枚組のボックス・セットを持っていたのですが、なかなか充実した演奏であったので、このボックス・セットに収録されている未発表の音源も聴いてみようと思い、購入した次第です。演奏、歌唱だけなら、迷わず☆５個をつけていたのですが・・・。うーん、悔しいです。

I have always thought that Billie holiday was a beautiful jazz singer and I purchased this set recently to collect the missing 60 extra takes there are in here of songs she issued in the period between 1933 and 1944.

Having had over the years various bits of this period on lp and cd this set gives so much more, the quality of the recording trans-fares are excellent, the clarity is in some cases breathtaking ,when the quality slightly may drop due to rarity of the take,it does not seem to matter after hearing such clarity on most of the issued takes, these songs have been cleaned up and cared for by people who loved and treasured her art.

With her you also have encyclopedia of jazz artists backing her and soloing with great delicacy and beauty, saying just enough to match the beauty of her voice, Duke Ellington and his orchestra, Count Basie and his orchestra, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Benny Carter, Johny Hodges, Ben Webster, Gene Krup, Cosy Cole the list is emence over 65 star and prime movers in Jazz of that day are included in her line-Ups, and on top of that you have lyrics in the songs to cover every mood you may come across in your life.

Tales of love and joy told by a voice who as well as being great story teller, is also a very fine instrument as well. buy and enjoy.

Questa è sicuramente una delle tante presentazioni che si può fare sulla cantante jazz più famosa e carismatica del mondo.

Una voce unica, inimitabile quella della Holiday, che pur avendo vissuto una vita a dir poco "infernale", è riuscita a regalarci delle canzoni, delle interpretazioni e delle emozioni irripetibili. E questo cofanetto conferma pienamente quanto appena detto.

Le registrazioni riproducono in maniera fedele la musica di allora.

Questo cofanetto occorre averlo nella propria discoteca!

This set is a European budget edition of the more lavish US box. Discs are in simple cardboard sleeves; the 10 of them and the booklet fit neatly in a cardboard box the size of a thick jewel case. Another review incorrectly identifies this as a Definitive Records (Spain) issue. However, this is genuine Sony Music, Legacy series. The sound is as good as the US edition. Extra tracks (alternative takes and airchecks) start on disc 7 and take up the last three discs, as on the US edition. The booklet contains full production notes, an alphabetical song index, and Gary Giddins' essay "Ladies Day". Another essay by Farah Jasmine Griffin describes literary references to Ms. Holiday. The sound on these 2001 remasters is excellent: hi-hats and bass are easily heard. The sound is possibly as open and natural as it will ever get. I am very pleased with this set.

Although Billie's Columbia recordings have been reissued many times and in many formats, the one used here with the sessions complete as far as master takes are concerned is most pleasing as it preserves the mood of those sessions without getting bogged down. Among the delights: songs that somehow never get featured on Billie Holiday compilations but contain stellar performances by the accompanists can be enjoyed side by side with the better known ones. Any of these ten discs (and especially the first six) can be appreciated as fine representations of the music of the era. For that reason, and while this complete set is available at budget prices, I recommend it over pick-and-choose three or four disc compliations. For a concise listening experience, the 2-CD reduction Lady Day is excellent (good selections and flow) and also recommended. Another recommended set (1-CD) is "A Musical Romance": Although by no means representative of everything she did during the Columbia years, it nevertheless manages to capture the essence of the period and some of her best work with Lester Young. The CD keeps you engaged and wishing the romance never ended with each passing song.

Toda la primera época de Billie, en Columbia, muy bien remasterizada para su antiguedad. Su voz ya era pura belleza, modulación, con ese fraseo y entonación tan especial.

En una caja de cartón vienen interiormente todos esos discos por separado y con créditos sufientes. Se acompaña de un libreto con más datos. Desde luego el precio es muy aceptable para hacerse con discos que por separado valdrían mucho más, y que además no son nada fáciles de conseguir.
