    作者は1960年代にシャーロック・ホームズもののパロディ「シュロック・ホームズ」シリーズで有名になり、本名のロバート・Ｌ・パイク名義で「ニューヨーク52分署」シリーズを書いているアメリカの作家でした。

    本書は「殺人同盟」三部作の最初の作品、"The Murder League"（1968年）の翻訳です。すでに過去の作家となってしまい生活に困っているロンドンのミステリ作家3人が、殺人を請け負って金を稼ごうと思いつくのが発端です。何とも素っ頓狂な導入ですが、自分たちが小説で試みた殺人の手口を実際に演じてみせるという展開は、「殺しの手口は単純であるべき」という彼らのミステリ作法と結びついていて、十件の殺人が成功するたびに読む方は快感をおぼえる、という仕組みになっているのでした。

    主人公3名、カラザス、ブリッグズ、シンプソンは、この作品でははっきりとしたキャラクターを与えられていないようですが、彼らの交わす会話は真剣になればなるほどユーモラスです。後半は裁判の中での弁護士と証人の対話で進んでいくのですが、そのやりとりの妙もまた、この作品の魅力の一つかも知れません。
