しかし、ミルト・ジャックソンの崇高なサマータイムは異質だけど

これはこれで絶品　と私は思う！

昔から好きで、良く新宿のビレッジゲイトでリクエストして聞いてました。何時聞いても気持ちがすっきりする。アルバム全体にリズム感が溢れていて、古いアルバムですが、余裕のない現代社会に潤いを与える１枚です。ぜひ現代の若いジャズファンにも聞いてほしいアルバムです。

このアルバムはジャズフルートの第一人者ハービー・マンのグループによるニューヨークのジャズクラブ ”ビレッジゲート”におけるライブ録音盤です。ハービー・マンのフルート、ヘイグッド・ハーディのビブラフォンがくりなすなんともいえない楽しくノリノリの演奏です。彼らの名人芸によるアドリブが聴衆の喝采をあびております。メンバーのヘイグッド・ハーディの名は他のレコードではめったに聞かない名前ですが、これがまた素晴らしいソロを披露しており、往年のジャズ喫茶のファンにもハービー・マンの ”カミング・ホーム・ベービー” は圧倒的な支持を受けておりました。

とても雰囲気の良いライブ盤で、リラックスして聴けます。Mann のフルートは抑制の利いた非常にセンスのいい演奏。ビブラフォンの音も実にいい感じです。冒頭の Comin' Home Baby がヒットして有名なアルバムだそうですが、続くガーシュウィン2曲も甲乙付けがたい演奏です。理屈抜きに楽しめるアルバムとはこういうのを言うんでしょう。

ピンと来ない人も多いかと思う。それならば是非このアルバムを聴いてみて欲しい。なるほどーと、ぽんと手を叩いて納得して頂けると思います。

ニューヨークのヴィレツジ・ゲイトで行われたこのライブはベースから始まりドラムが加わる。何とも言えないスリリングなイントロが続き、ハービー・マンが何も無かったかのように、すっと流れに入ってくる。やられた！思わずほくそえんでしまう瞬間である。他パートのソロも十二分に堪能でき、その場に居ないながらも会場の空気を満喫する事ができます。

曲数こそ少ないですが録音も非常に良いライブアルバムの決定版です！ぜひ部屋を暗くして、できるだけ音量を上げて（苦情が来ない程度に）聴いてみてください。耳が釘付けになるとは正にこの事です！

氏が昨年7月に亡くなって早一年。数々の足跡を見直す機会にもなるでしょう。とにかく最高の一枚です。

神戸に住んでいたときに、ジャズバーの主人に聞いたハービーマンの名前、最初に買って聞いたのがこのＣＤでした。とてもいい雰囲気の曲で気力がわいてきます。

そういえば最近ハービーマンは亡くなりましたね。彼の残した音楽ジャズフルートの世界大事にしたいです。

ここに収録されている＜Comin’ Home Babyの一大ヒットによって以降アトランティックで好きなことをやるのを許された、と来日した彼は語っていた＞らしい。その意味では出世作だろうし、それに見合う自由で軽快な演奏が愉しい。また、＜ラテンを演奏し始めたことについては＜その頃のジャズが俺には全然面白くなかったからだよ」とも＞言っていたそうだが、その機を見るに敏なところも、その後の彼の＜ラテン・ジャズにとどまらず、ボサ・ノヴァ、ロック、南部色＞など、様々な音楽との異種交配を繰り返していくプロセスの端緒ともなっている。

その成功に貢献しているのは、他にも柳沢てつや氏も指摘している、彼の＜底抜けの楽天性や快楽性＞という要素も大いにあることだろう。また、今回のような土着的な要素を取り入れながらも、彼のソフィスケイテッドされた都会的なセンスは不変であることも人気の秘密かもしれない。

かつて、「レコード・コレクターズ」に連載された“ブラック・ミュージック裏街道”の“ラテン音楽がブラック・ミュージックに落とす影”で椿正雄氏によってえらばれた名盤でもある。

Unglaubliche Aufnahmequalität - Kaufpflicht für alle Audio- / Vinylfreunde. Klingt wie gestern aufgenommen und nicht vor über 60 Jahren, da könnten sich junge Tontechniker mit allem Hightech-Krempel ein großes Stück abschneiden! Es gibt Doppelbass, einen singenden Vibraphoneplayer, tolle Rhythmen mit Schlagzeug, Percussion & Trommeln sowie die absolute Clubatmosphäre durch quatschende Leute zu hören - insbesondere im Kopfhörersound. Diese Aufnahme wird IMMER aktuell, frisch und neu bleiben! Vinyl ohnehin toll, auch der Transfer auf CD ist gelungen, wünsche mir noch eine DVD/BR - Audioversion!

Album Live del flautista Herbie Mann registrato al night club Village Gate di New York, nel Novembre del 1961. Non sembra nemmeno una registrazione dal vivo, di tanto che è superba la qualità del suono.

Tutti gli strumenti emergono con vividezza olografica e non pare proprio che siano passati sessant'anni dal giorno del concerto.

Jazz latino della prima ora, bellissimo e suadente, pieno di ritmi percussivi, questo gioiellino di ristampa Full Analogue (con riversamento diretto dal nastro master) su vinile 180g privo di difetti, della tedesca Speaker Corner, è da consigliare senza riserve.

Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is widely regarded as the best jazz album ever recorded. Herbie Mann's At the Village Gate may well be the category of best, too. Every track on here is wonderful and different and creative. For instance, Comin' Home Baby starts with this somewhat long opening session of the bass soon accompanied by drums. Then, in comes this playful, flirting flute, not trying to make a splash, just swinging, restrained, cool. The flute quickly moves to the front and establishes a memorable, foot-tapping theme. A little later still arrives the xylophone in the background. So beautifully and subtly executed. And oh, much later, near the middle-end, you have this breath-taking and intricate bass solo. Wow. They were taking no prisoners. Summertime opens with xylophones then moves to a rhythmic and cool theme. With congas, it has an almost breezy, Latin-jazz feel. It Ain't Necessarily So starts with the tambourines and a more passionate, yet still restrained 60s protest-, psychedelic- sound. (The album was recorded in 1964.) The most interesting thing about this last track, aside from the lovely theme, is its length--nearly 20 minutes. What makes this album unique and perhaps surpassing Kind of Blue is it was recorded before a live audience. Davis said somewhere that he had (finally) settled on Kind of Blue on the day the Davis quartet created it for studio performance. It was as close as he could get to improvisational which Davis did not like necessarily for that reason. It wasn't improv-enough. At the Village Gate, however, you hear people talking, responding, and humming in the background. This "noise" adds an extra dimension of realness, of being front-row in the swing, which is jazz at its best.
