    親会社の経営危機で子会社が閉鎖に追い込まれたときに、子会社を去らずに残務整理を手伝ってくれた女性がいた。彼女は妊娠していて次の仕事を探すのを諦めていたので、動ける間は手伝うと申し出てくれたのだった。私は既にその会社におらず人伝にそのことを聞いたので、彼女になにかプレゼントしようと思った。それがこの本を初めて手にしたきっかけだった。（なお当時はアマゾンがまだなくちょっとした書店でみつけた。）

    　まず、ちっちゃな子のためによい絵本の常として、絵が分かりやすい、親しみやすいなど魅力的で且つ絵だけでも内容が分かり言葉は最小限であること。実は彼女は日本人ではないので、この本なら彼女にも直感的にわかる。これにしよう、と思った。つぎに、赤ん坊ってどんなものか、ちょっと意外なことも書いてある。いわば赤ちゃんの全体像を、とりわけおにいちゃん、おねぇちゃんになる子供の視点で、あるいはそうなる子のために書かれていること。この点はユニークだと思ったし、いっしょに仲よく育つように大切だと思った。

    　今回は、普段いろいろお世話になっている方に二人目のお孫さんが誕生と聞き、最初からこの本に決めた。生まれてくる赤ちゃんのためのプレゼントではなく、拙宅にも連れられて２度来たことのある、ちょっと甘えっ子（？）の、おにいちゃんになる坊やのために。娘さん（おかあさん）には喜んでいただけたそうだ。義理であったとしても嬉しい。

    次男が生まれたとき、長男に買ってあげました。弟が大きくなって一緒に遊べる日を楽しみにするお兄ちゃんの気持ちが、短い文でとてもうまく表現されています。ユーモラスな挿絵と「きみもはやくおおきくなりなさい」という最後のセリフが好きです。子供たちより私自身が気に入っている本。
