    退位した天皇のみに与えられる尊号「上皇」を天皇ではなかった実父に贈りたい、という

    光格天皇と、同じく、前将軍のみに許される「大御所」の格式を、将軍ではなかった父親

    の一橋治済に贈りたい、という十一代将軍家斉。

    両者の要求を断乎として拒絶した松平定信は、それが

    遠因となり、政治の要職から、外されていくことになる。

    国内で、そうした権力者たちの不毛な虚栄心の争いが行われていた頃、

    エカテリーナ女帝に拝謁まで果たした大黒屋光太夫が根室に到着する。

    くしくもその時、同じ松前の地で、最上徳内がカラフト調査のまとめをしていたのだが、

    運命の悪戯か、彼は光太夫たちに会うことなく、江戸へ戻ってしまうこととなるのである――。

    　林子平の海国兵談完成。以外は全編暗い、重い。

    世代が変わりるまでどれだけの人間が苦渋をなめ、犠牲になるのかという趣。

    杉田玄白ら、初期の風雲児達退場が近い。

    ああ、ほんと面白いんだけど、読んでると鬱になりそうなムードが、

    しばらく続きそうです…。

    光太夫ついに帰国。ロシアのラクスマン、根室に碇を降ろす。

    大黒屋光太夫は、ロシアの女帝エカテリーナに会うためラクスマンとともにペテルブルグまでの5800露里の旅へ陸路出発する。1791年6月28日、女帝エカテリーナに拝謁。2度の拝謁を実現するも、帰国の返事はもらえず。そのまま２カ月間待ち続ける。

    その間、ロシアは日本人送還計画を策定していた。ロシアは東ロシア発展のために日本との交易を求めていて、実際にロシアの日本語学校は86年の歴史を誇る。光太夫たち日本人漂流民は、幕府との交渉の切り札として日本に返還し、交易を結びあわよくば通商条約の締結を計画する。待ちに待ったのち、光太夫の帰国がついに決定する。

    林子平は、海国兵談を完成させるも発禁処分となる。海国兵談は海の守りを説く内容だが、老中松平定信は外国には目がむかない。ロシアとの交易のためにも長崎のように北方と江戸湾に、さらに主要港に砲台を置くべきだという子平の主張は無視される。

    しかし子平の懸念どおりに、はやくも翌年には、光太夫たち漂流民をのせたロシア船が根室に碇をおろす。子平の予想は現実となるが、海国兵談は発禁処分、子平は既に病死。何の調査も備えも知識もない幕府。一方現場では好奇心を抑えられずに役人や庶民はロシア人とどんどん仲良くなっていく。幕府はロシアに対してどう対処するのか。。。１１巻も面白いです。
