    「夢の島で逢いましょう」は旧装版と改訂版の2種類がありますが、収録作品が一部異なります。

    旧装版には「食の探求者」が、改訂版には「たん壺劇場」が収録されており、それぞれもう一方の版では読めなくなっています。

    そのため、山野一ファンなら2冊とも持っておきたいところです。

    イヤハヤ言語道断なマンガ家が出現したものだ。その作品たるや気の弱い婦女子ならば一読三嘆、三日三晩はウナされること確実の、衛生博覧会と因果物の見世物とトッド・ブラウニングの「フリークス」とジョン・カーペンターの「物体X」の濃縮混合エキスの如き代物である。

    このキモチワルサは、只単にフリークスやワケのわからない蛆虫、ミミズ、廻虫の類がワンサと画面にあふれているからだけではない。キモチワルイ絵なら絵心さえあればサルだって描ける。山野のキモチワルサは、そのキモチワルサが常に人間の肉体から発していると云う極めて生理的なキモチワルサなのだ。冒頭の「蓄膿三代」のキモチワルサは、蓄膿症自体の生理的不快感に加え、その蓄膿症三代記をさも嬉しそうに語る主人公のチクノー的人格とそれをまたゾクゾクと魅入られたように聞いてしまう作者とそれをまた「ウププッ」と思いながら読んでしまう読者の心理と生理のキモチ悪さである。

    だがこれは山野の作品の中ではまだオンケンな部類である。彼の本領、即ち生理的肉体に対するこだわり。つまり人間の肉体そのものの内在する気色悪さ、訳の判らなさ。つまり、外見はさほどではなくとも皮一枚下に、ドロドログニャグニャのハラワタ、ミミズの如き血管、神経、さらにはサナダ虫、廻虫、ぎょう虫、包虫等々と云った考えるだにオゾケ立つキモチワルイモノを秘匿している肉体を持って生きるコトのキモチワルサ。それらが最も端的に表われているのがラスト2作「タブー」と「DREAM ISLAND」である。どちらもテーマは肉体、それも細胞レベルの「主体」への造反でである。その造反の引き金となるのは、「タブー」では、「人間の肉体が実は一個の統一体ではなく、個々の細胞の共生体であり、我々の『意識』はそれらの細胞がよりよくキモチ良く生きるために作り出した幻想にすぎない」と云う認識である。その認識を持ったとたん「意識」は抹殺され、肉体は人間の形をとるのをやめ、その口から無数の虫の群れと化した細胞を吐き出すのである。

    「DREAN ISLAND」で引き金となるのは夢の島刑務所（「バトルキッズ」のパクリではないと思う）における高濃度の汚染物質だが、コチラでは、一度造反した細胞が巨大な共生体を形づくると云う「進化」の物語でもある。ここで思い起されるのはライアル・ワトスンの「あらゆる生命体はDNAの乗り物にすぎず、進化も決局はDNAをより安全に効率的に遠い未来に運ぶためのプロセスだったのではなかろうか?」と云うギモンである。とにかくとんでもない想像力の持ち主の登場に拍手を贈ろうではないか。
