  一流の学者による、「骨のある」世界史の参考書である。永原慶ニの精講日本史、安藤達朗の大学への日本史、など、昭和の時代には、大学入試以上のレベルの含蓄のある参考書が存在した。確かに、大学入試へは必要ない知識かもしれない。しかし、昨今の参考書は、合格のテクニックに走りすぎている感がある。役に立つ、立たないではなく、大人になってもまた読みたい、教養としての、本物の参考書である。

  世界史の隠れた古典的名著

  戦後、東京教育大（現筑波大）の有坂巌教授が書いた参考書です。最近は予備校の講師や高校の先生が執筆した参考書が主流ですが、これは全編大学の権威ある教授本人が原稿を書いています。しかも、当時の参考文献（英書も含む）が各項目にのっています。たいへん分厚い本で、受験生がすべて読む時間はないでしょうが、参考書として座右の書となるでしょう。それ以上に、歴史に興味を持つ大人にとって、おもしろい本だと思います。やや文章の表現が古くさいですが、知的欲求に十分応えてくれる本だと思います。池田書店によると、もう増刷しないようです。残念ですね。
