    人は何故歴史を必要とするのか、また、決して人類にとって普遍的な要素ではない歴史意識というものがいかに芽生えてきたのか。この二つのテーゼから始まる記述は、後者を中心に語られ、次いで歴史記述の始まりにシフトする。話の中心はやはりメソポタミアやエジプト、イスラエル、ギリシアと中東地域を舞台として展開されるが、また、補足程度ではあるものの中国の歴史意識の萌芽にも言及されている。

    歴史は個々の人間や民族・国家のアイデンティティの根源であるがゆえに、時に捏造されたり、プロパガンダ的扱いを受けたりする。

    古代に起こった歴史意識を知ることは、翻って現代における歴史のあり方を考える上で重要なヒントになるのではないか。その手始めとして、本書は歴史学入門者にお勧めである。

    年代を刻む営みはいつから始まったのか

    年代記が歴史叙述に発展を遂げたのはいつか

    有名な古代文明それぞれの歴史意識はどのように違うのか

    現代に書かれた歴史書や、過去の歴史著述に目を通すことは多くても、歴史著述の発生に遡って、各文明圏毎に比較したことはあまりないのではないでしょうか。本書は小冊子ながら、ポイントを明確に簡潔整理し、知的に啓発される内容を多く含んでいます。

    古代オリエントにおいて、年を区別する必要から刻まれた年代の記録が、歴史叙述へ発展を遂げた過程とは、

    ３人称で歴史が記述されはじめたのはいつか、

    インドで歴史叙述が発展しなかった理由は何故か、

    旧約聖書の歴史叙述史における位置と意義はなにか、

    ギリシャと中国の歴史叙述の姿勢の相違とは、

    など、視点を比較に置くとき、それぞれの文明における歴史叙述が、実はそれぞれにおいて異なり、類型をなしていて、現在ある歴史記述の基本的なパターンの原型をなしていることに驚かされました。事実を列挙する歴史記述、何かを証明するための歴史記述、民族の集団の記憶としての歴史、テーマ史、教学的歴史叙述など、基本的な歴史叙述は古代において成立していることがわかる。

    本文と関連する図版もまたバリエーションがあり面白い。

    ウルのジグラットの写真が復元前と復元後のものが並べて掲載されていたり、アレキサンドリアの復元鳥瞰図やソロモン神殿復元図、ティグラト・ピレセルの八角柱の写真など、あまり看たことのない図版もおおく、楽しめる本といえます。
