    「リヴァトン館」が良かったので、久々に凄い才能の著者が現れたと思って

    こっちも楽しみに読んだのですが…　

    まず、時制がバラバラの出来事が交互に語られるので、途中で思考が中断

    される感じで、すんなり物語に入り込めない。

    「上」を読み終えて、「下」はもっと良いかと期待したけれど、読み進めるうちに

    「これってハーレクインじゃないの?」という印象が強くなりました。少なくとも、

    文学とは思えないチープな後味。　ガッカリ感満載で読み終えました。

    「リヴァトン館」の賛辞に「ダフネ・デュ・モーリア(「レベッカ」)の後継者」とありましたが、

    この本を読んで、それはダフネ・デュ・モーリアに失礼だと悟りました。

    でも「リヴァトン館」は良かったので、読むならそっちをお勧めします。

    『秘密の花園』へのオマージュが嬉しい

    以前から気になっていた本だったのですが、『リヴァトン館』の哀しいイメージから敬遠。

    読んでみたら、謎解きの面白さにぐいぐい引かれていき、もっと早く読めばよかったと思いました。

    波止場にぽつんと取り残された少女、という始まりから、物語がどんどん大きくなっていきます。

    孫の時代、祖母の時代、その祖母の時代と時間が飛ぶのですが、話がうまくつながっていて

    当時のことを回想した直後に、その時代が現在進行形で語られるという具合。

    だから100年前のことも生き生きとしていて、古臭さがありません。

    それぞれの時代のそれぞれの女性の生活や思いが丁寧に描かれていて、

    どれも興味深く、それを知るだけでも価値があると思いました。

    そこに謎解きが加わって、解こうとすると新たにまた謎が出てくるので、面白さ抜群。

    また、タイトルから想像できる通り、バーネットの『秘密の花園』を彷彿とさせます。

    特に物語の舞台がイギリスのお屋敷に移ってからは、新しい人が登場する度に、

    これは『秘密の花園』のあの人だ！、とわかるくらいはっきりしていて、

    ちょこっと出てくる鳥でさえ、あのコマドリを思い出させました。

    もちろんストーリーは全く違うのですが、閉ざされた花園も出てきますし、

    サプライズの登場人物もいました（これは下巻の最初の方でした）。

    あの話の雰囲気を別の形で味わえることで郷愁に浸れるというか、

    「あぁ、『秘密の花園』だ…」と感慨深いものがありました。

    『秘密の花園』が好きな人には、是非読んでほしいと思います。

    まだ下巻は読み終わっていませんが、ここまで緻密に物語を構成し、

    一人一人の人物に世を与え、人の弱さや強さを描いたのは素晴らしいし、

    どんな最後になっても満足できるのでは、と思っています。

    最後を知るのがちょっと怖いですが…

    デュ・モーリアと比較する内容紹介を目にしていましたが、実はデュ・モーリアはあまり読んでおらず、クリスチアナ・ブランドのロマンチックサスペンスみたいなものだったら面白いかなと購入。

    読後感は内容紹介が正しく（笑）、ブランドではなく昔ちょっと読んだデュ・モーリアに確かに近い印象です。が、デュ・モーリアほどの鮮やかな展開はなく、むしろゴシック・ロマン設定のメロドラマ（悪口でなく本来の意味です）が手堅く語られていく印象です。

    年代・場面の切り替えのタイミングが非常にうまいです。

    その切り替えによって、読者は常に登場人物よりも一足先に次の手がかり、情報を与えられます。そのため謎解きを楽しむことはできないのですが、主人公の動きを応援したい心理が生じ、物語としてのリーダビリティも高まっているといえます。

    惜しむらくは、ラストをラブロマンスとしてまとめてしまったこと。

    ストーリーの軸がラブロマンスであるわけではないのですが、ラストで主人公の新しいパートナーとの人生を示唆してしまったため、様々な人生のありよう、憎悪や執着までもが小さくまとまってしまったようで...女子供向けになってしまったというと語弊がありますが、もう少し「毒」の要素を強調した方が鮮烈な印象を残したんじゃないのかなぁ...

    この点がどうしても残念なのですが、文庫としてあちこち持ち歩きながら読む本としては十分堪能できた本でした。

    何気なく書店で手にとって読んで、面白かった。

    はじめの頃の少女カサンドラが、自分の歯ブラシが見つからない、と震え泣くシーンは妙に心に迫った。ネルが骨董商を始めるきっかけになる時の話で、育ての父親に教わっていた大工仕事が手に馴染んでいることに気づき涙するシーンも。

    だから、育ての親と生みの親は一体どちらが身に必要なものか？と読み終わってからも考えさせられた。

    批評に「ハーレクイン」とあり、ハーレクインものを読んだことが無いので検索したところ「恋愛小説」とあった。確かに、恋愛に帰結したラストだったけれど、少女漫画的ではなかったな。男は割と影薄いですよね。この物語に出てくる男は、一途過ぎて頼りない人が多いような。要は女ですよ。女のキャラと関係がみんな濃い。アデリーンの行くとこまで行く悪役ぶりは、全く面白かった。

    解説も面白くて、解説に出てきた作品達を調べてみようと思います。

    不可思議な出来事をスタートにじっくりと情報が追加され、本当にゆっくり話の全貌が見えてきます。

    最初は大分距離の離れたプロットが多いので、ヒントはありながらも、一体何のことだろう？と感じることも多かったです。

    ですが、上品な翻訳と、気になるタイミングでの場面転換があり、ついつい先が気になっていきます。

    時間をかけて、ゆっくり読みたくなる一冊です。

    レビューを書きたいと思った本は久々でした。

    こちらは上下巻の感想です。個人的には前作『リヴァトン館』よりも好きです。厄介だったのは、私個人の性格もありますが、なかなか話にのれなかったことでしょうか。何分長い話なので、のめり込むまでは集中力がないと読みきれません。上巻の半分くらいまでは全貌がよくわからないし、ゆっくりと話が進むのでちょっと辛抱しました。その後は個人的にはどんどん読み進め、下巻もあっという間に終わりました。

    さて、本の内容ですがあらすじは既に紹介されている通りです。この本の面白いところは3人の女性の目線によって、さまざまな時代や角度から真実が見え隠れするところ。最初は頭が混乱するけれど慣れていくと様々な時代に飛び移るために、飽きがこないところが良いです。また、要所に挟まれる『おとぎ話』は物語の根幹の象徴であり、布石でもあります。ここはしっかり読んでおくことをおすすめします笑 リヴァトン館のような、衝撃的なスキャンダルみたいなことはないのですが、登場人物それぞれの心情の動きが繊細で生々しく、思わず感情移入してしまいます。特に終盤ではイライザのことを想うと、かなり切なく悲しい気持ちにさせられます。何もかも丸く収まるハッピーエンド、とはいきませんが、読了後に残るやり切れなさや甘さのようなものはここしばらくで読んだ本にはなかったもの。ゴシックロマンス、19世紀英国や秘密の埋もれた古城、、、などなどお好きな方には是非おすすめしたいですね。
