1949(昭和24)年、埼玉県生れ。早稲田大学ではミステリ・クラブに所属。母校埼玉県立春日部高校で国語を教えるかたわら、’89(平成元)年「覆面作家」として『空飛ぶ馬』でデビュー。’91年『夜の蝉』で日本推理作家協会賞を受賞。作品に『ニッポン硬貨の謎』(2006年本格ミステリ大賞評論・研究部門受賞)『鷺と雪』(’09年直木賞受賞)など：本データは『1950年のバックトス　(ISBN-13:978-4101373324 )』が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

    奇妙なタイトルであるが、著者がさまざまな詩歌と出会った経験を書いている。知らなかった詩人にも出会うことができて、得した気分にもなれる。ふだん詩歌に無関係の生活を送っているが、これを読んだときには日本の文化のなかで詩歌という重要な部分があったことを確認できる。著者は詩歌にやたら詳しいのでそのウンチクだけでも楽しめる読んで損のない本。

    　NHKラジオ第1の『高橋源一郎の飛ぶ教室』という番組で面白い話がありました。大学入試問題に自分の文章が出た作家が、その入試問題に解答したところ、その解答は間違いだったそうです。文章は、書いた本人の意図とは違って解釈されることがあるということです。教育とは様々な解釈があり得るのに、一つの解答が正しいとすることのようです。

    　学生の頃、私は国語の成績が悪かった。もしかしてユニークな解釈をしてしまうせいだったかもしれません。今でも思い出すのですが、先生にさされて黙っていると、「分からないから黙っているんでしょう」といわれ、「分かっていても言葉にできないことがあるんです」と返事をして、教室をシーンとさせたことがありました。それ以来、文章を読むことが嫌いになったような気がします。

    　文学嫌いのままでは、人生の楽しみが半減すると思うようになってきました。そこで文学作品の解釈を指導してくれるような本を探していたところ、本書を発見しました。特に解釈の難しい詩歌を扱っていますから、私の目的に合っているはずです。

    　ところが本書は、詩歌とその解説という構成にはなっていない。著者の文章の中に詩歌がはめ込まれている。要するに著者の随筆集なのです。

    　そこで、詩歌を先に読み、その後に文章を頭から読むことにしてみました。どうだろう、私の解釈は文章の趣旨とほとんど違うことはなかった。たまには間違っていても、そう解釈するのかと納得させられた。

    　こんな目的で本書を読む人はいないだろうが、これで少しは文学音痴でないことが確かめられて感謝しています。
