    雑誌などに掲載された数多くの本の批評をまとめた本書。

    批評の対象となっているものは多岐に渡り、

    随筆、科学的考察、ひいては辞書にまで及ぶ。

    中には読んだことがある本も少ないながらあり、

    その感想は著者のものとおおまかに一致するものであった。

    導入部の批評をすることについての著者の見解や、

    批評にまつわる歴史などは鼻につくような気もした。

    しかし、批評はどれも分かりやすく、

    明日読む本を決めるのに非常に役立ってくれる。

    丸谷氏の小説の批評を読みたいと思っていたので、少し残念。辞書と詩歌の評論が多いような気がしました。

    私は特に、詩歌には弱いので、丸谷氏の明晰な解説はいいのですが、基礎力に欠ける私は、あまり楽しくありませんでした。

    丸谷才一氏の定評のある書評の中からの選集。国内編。

    その選書、批評、表現全て的確で役に立ってなおかつ面白い。読んだことのある本についての納得の評価、読んでいない本はつい購入を考えてしまう。読書好きにも、これからの人にも是非ともお薦めする大人の書評集。

    本来は、すべての書評をこの文庫の編集方針と同様に人物順に編纂して発行して欲しいのですが、今の経済状況では文庫で我慢せざるを得ないのが残念です。

    何故か出ていない個人全集というと更に難しいのでしょうが、全書評、全人物評、全薀蓄エッセイ、全ユーモアエッセイ、という様に効能機能別の集成が編纂刊行される日を夢見ております。薄い紙で各一冊に纏めて軽い本となれば良いですね。寝転んで楽しめたり、旅のお供になったり。丸谷才一氏の文章は殆ど読んでおりますが、一生の愉しみ、睡眠薬として是非とも実現して欲しいものです。勿論挿画装幀は和田誠氏ですね。今回のも中にも挿画があって楽しめました。兎に角お薦めいたします。

    丸谷才一が、1970年代から2000年頃までの30年間に、週刊朝日に書き続けた書評から、120編くらいを集めたものである。最初の部分には、書評なるものがいかにして日本に定着してきたかが書かれているが、この3編は同じようなテーマであちこちに書き散らしたものを集めたもので、内容はかなり重複している。収められている書評は、週刊朝日に掲載したときには、それぞれ、その時々の時節に合わせて取り上げられたものだろうが、それらから拾い出して、「快楽としての読書」という刺激的なタイトルで、再度出版するというのはいかがなものだろうか。文庫本で1050円という価格も、ちょっと高すぎる。やがて1円の古本で出まわれば、まあ購入しても良いかもしれないが。

    冒頭の「書評と週刊朝日」の部分で、「いまわたしたちが読むやうな形の本、つまり・・・４各ページに『ノンブル』を打ち」とある。「ノンブル」とは印刷用語なのだそうだが、いきなりこんなわけのわからない表現が使われると、書き手は読む人の立場など、なにも考えていないとしかおもえなくなる。それも、「ノンブル」は和製フランス語。「番号」というあたりまえの日本語を使わない、著者のおごりを感じ、読む気を完全になくした。
