    原著が良書なので，本書の構成・内容も良書と感じる．しかし，一部直訳に近いような箇所もあって，すんなり理解できないところもある．特に4章，何故この日本語訳で推敲せずに出版に踏み切ったのか･･･．大学生がゼミか何かで全訳したものを整理して出版したのかなと思って訳者を見てみると，大学の先生方がズラリ．

    きちんと理解したい箇所は原著に戻るのが良し．

    一通り読み終えました。

    本の内容自体は非常に分かりやすく、良書でした。

    基本的な事柄もページ数を割いて丁寧に説明してくれており、統計学に関する前提知識が少ない方でも、時間をかければしっかりとベイズモデリングの知識が身につくと思います。

    しかし、いかんせん誤訳・悪訳が多く、章によっては原著を参照しなければ誤解してしまう箇所や理解できない箇所が非常に多くありました。

    これは、日本語が翻訳調で読みづらいといったレベルの話ではなく、そもそも英文の意味を適切に解釈できていない箇所が非常に多いという意味です。

    翻訳者には、英語があまり得意でない方が何人かいらっしゃいます(その中には、大学で教員をしている方も含まれています...)。

    おそらく、そうした方々は、本の内容をあまり理解できないままに日本語訳を書いてしまっているのではないでしょうか。

    事実、内容を理解していればありえないような誤訳がたびたび見つかります。

    サポートページに正誤表が載っていますが、誤訳箇所のごくごく一部しか把握されておらず、かつ2017年から更新されていません。

    読む際には原著をすぐに参照できるようにしておくか、ある程度英語が読める方であれば、はじめから原著を読む方がよいと思います。

    最初に断っておきますが、素晴らしいベイズ統計の入門書 (でも分厚い洋書) が日本語で読めるのはとてもありがたいことです。翻訳された方々の労力には本当に敬意を払います。さらに断っておきますが、amazonの「翻訳が駄目」というレビューのほとんどは、自分が理解できないのを翻訳のせいにしているだけで、翻訳者がお気の毒だと思います。翻訳調の訳文自体は悪くないと思います。

    でも、本書の一部に関しては本当に翻訳あるいは校正が酷いです。例えばp.100で、コイン投げの表が出る確率を「p(表)」と書いた1行下で「p(H)」と書くなど、読解に無駄な労力が必要になります。誤訳ではないですが、表5.4 (p.107) では、行のヘッダに書いてあるシンボル (病気有り→ :) , 病気なし→ :( ) と、セル中のシンボル (病気有り→ :( , 病気なし→ :) と考えないとおかしい) で意味が逆になっており、混乱を招きます (原典は正しく表記されていました)。さらに細かいところをあげればキリがないですが、p.109の真ん中あたりで文章と次の式の関係が明示されていないところがあり、何かなと思って原典を見たら、"given the data: " と書いてあり、さすがにここを飛ばしたら意味わからないだろうというようなツッコミどころが頻繁に出てくる章があります。「何らかの」という意味の "some" を「いくつかの」と訳していて、これも混乱しました (p.101)。いくつもあったら困ると思う。。

    それでも大半は、自分が不慣れな数学用語に四苦八苦しながら原典を読むより楽だと思います。でも原典 (第2版です。第1版とはかなり変わっています) は意味がわからないときのために必須かなという気がします。5章がかなり難物で苦労していてそこまでしか読めていませんが、以降の章はもっと良いと信じたいです。

    翻訳がこなれてないとか誤訳とかそういうレベルを超えて日本語として崩壊してる箇所が散見される。

    翻訳は研究者として金にも業績にもならないのだから云々という話があるが、この訳書はあまりにも酷い。

    訳者とこれをそのまま通した編集者には知的誠実さの欠片もないと思います。

    原著者にも失礼。

    これからベイズ統計を本格的に学ぼうとしている一読者として感想を述べます。投稿者の評価が低く、その原因として翻訳が悪いとされていますが、誤訳は気になりますが訳書としては合格レベルかと思います。理系の訳書は誤訳が多い事があり、版を重ねていく内にそれが解消されていくくでしょう。数式やプログラミングには大きな間違いはないと思いました。訳が不明瞭ならば監訳者あるいは著者にメールで尋ねれば良いと思います。もしも、返事が来ないようではその時に訳者として失格と言えるでしょう。高価な厚い本ですが、丹念に読み込めば必ず知識が増えます。お勧めします。
