1944（昭和19）年、東京生れ。東京写真大学中退。流通業界誌編集長を経て、作家、エッセイスト。「本の雑誌」編集長。『さらば国分寺書店のオババ』でデビューし、その後『アド・バード』（日本ＳＦ大賞）『武装島田倉庫』などのＳＦ作品、『わしらは怪しい探検隊』シリーズなどの紀行エッセイ、『犬の系譜』（吉川英治文学新人賞）『哀愁の町に霧が降るのだ』『岳物語』『大きな約束』などの自伝的小説、『風のかなたのひみつ島』『全日本食えば食える図鑑』『海を見にいく』など旅と食の写真エッセイと著書多数。映画『白い馬』では、日本映画批評家大賞最優秀監督賞ほかを受賞している。

    何故か家にあり、本棚から発見された本。

    昭和の匂いがぷんぷんする内容。

    有名な筆者独特の文体も含めて、懐かしく楽しんだ。一話４Pくらいのエッセイの集合体。

    でもなぜか一冊も手元にありません。

    なぜなら、この本を読むと、

    そのオモシロさを誰かに伝えたくなり、貸してしまう。

    単行本は昭和59年刊行。｢オール讀物｣｢ドリブ｣｢朝日ジャーナル｣｢ナンバー｣などに連載したエッセイを集めたもの。いろいろな物や物事を持ち上げたり引きずりおろしたりしている。印象としては怒りの方が勝っている。いつものように電話カバーに怒り、テレビカバーに理解を示している。時代を感じる。時代といえばソープランドがまだトルコだ。｢んとんと｣や｢すまぬすまぬ｣という著者の常套句も出ている。解説は沢野ひとし。

    　ボールペンはなぜ途中で書けなくなってしまうのか？　空港の金属探知機の音は少し大げさじゃないかい？　どーしてあのおとっつぁんたちはあんなにエラソーなんだ！？　と、誰でも一度は思ったことがあるような、日常生活の中のほんのちょっとした疑問や感想が書かれたエッセイ。

    　タイトルは『赤眼評論』だが、時には文字通りツリ眼コノヤロ的に「電話機のカバーはなんだ！」と怒り、また時にはトロ眼まったり的に「冬はやっぱりコタツなのだ」と言う様子が目に浮かんでくるようだ。
