ハンガリー生まれのアゴタ・クリストフは幼少期を第二次大戦の戦禍の中で過ごし、1956年には社会主義国家となった母国を捨てて西側に亡命している。生い立ちがヨーロッパ現代史そのものを体現している女性である。彼女の処女小説である本作品も、ひとまずは東欧の現代史に照らして読めるが、全体のテイストは歴史小説というよりはむしろエンターテインメント性の強い「寓話」に近い。
そもそもこの小説には人名や地名はおろか、固有名詞はいっさい登場しない。語り手は双子の兄弟「ぼくら」である。戦禍を逃れ、祖母に預けられた「ぼくら」は、孤立無援の状況の中で、生き抜くための術を一から習得し、独学で教育を身につけ、そして目に映った事実のみを「日記」に記していく。彼等の壮絶なサバイバル日記がこの小説なのである。肉親の死に直面しても動じることなく、時には殺人をも犯すこの兄弟はまさに怪物であるが、少年から「少年らしさ」の一切を削ぎ落とすことで、作者は極めて純度の高い人間性のエッセンスを抽出することに成功している。彼らの目を通して、余計な情報を極力排し、朴訥（ぼくとつ）な言葉で書かれた描写は、戦争のもたらす狂気の本質を強く露呈する。
凝りに凝ったスタイル、それでいて読みやすく、先の見えない展開、さらに奥底にはヨーロッパの歴史の重みをうかがわせる、と実に多彩な悦びを与えてくれる作品である。続編の『証拠』『第三の嘘』も本作に劣らない傑作である。（三木秀則）

    戦争は人間の理性とモラルを奪ってしまうのか、、、人間性を失った大人たちが、豚野郎だとか牝犬と口汚く相手を罵っているが、正直動物の方が普遍的な分マシである。

    とにかく出てくる逸話がすべてこれ以上ないほどグロテスク。生き延びるために、本能的に？何の躊躇もなく淡々と非行を極める双子たち。

    名前も明かされず、常に”ぼくら”と呼び、文字通り一心同体なのも異様だし、感情を一切排した文章も、双子とはいえ心の中までは完全に一致しているとは限らないからかと思われる。

    残酷で悲惨だが、理解も同情も共感も求められない。とにかく双子とその物語に圧倒される。

    日記形式ゆえチャプターが短く、余計な描写や行間がないため、飽きる間もなくどんどん引き込まれてしまう。

    ラストは突然終わってしまったので、次の本も読もうと思う。

    ラルボー書房の蜷川さんがXで「もう一度『プロジェクト・ヘイル・メアリー』みたいな没入一気読み体験がしたい」という人にお薦めの3冊を挙げていらっしゃった。

    こちらがそのうちの1冊。

    これはすごい。戦時中にひどい（一言で済ませられないのだけど）祖母に預けられた双子の少年たちが自分たちで生き延びるために様々なことを乗り越え、やり遂げてきたことを客観的事実のみで書き記した（という体の）文章。

    感情がそこに乗らない。読み手に感情がすべて任されてしまう。その分、戸惑いと「この読み方で自分は合っているか」という並走感のようなものが出て来て新鮮だった。出来上がったストーリーに飲み込まれるのではなくて、そこに自分が対処するような緊張感があった。

    面白くてというか止まらなくて一気読みだった。

    これはおすすめ。

    しれないが、読んだ人にしか理解できない

    衝撃と残酷と妙な優しさが混然としていた。

    何度か読み返した。

    不思議で孤独なとりとめのない小説だが

    妙に惹かれてしまう・・・
