    Gavin Lyall was born in Birmingham, England in 1932 and was educated at King Edward’s School. After completing his compulsory two years of National Service he studied English at Pembroke College, Cambridge, graduating with honours.

    Lyall worked briefly as a reporter for the Birmingham Gazette, Picture Post and Sunday Graphic newspapers and then as a film director for the BBC’s Tonight programme. He married author Katherine Whitehorn in 1958.

    His first novel, The Wrong Side of the Sky, was published in 1961 to immediate success. Lyall’s first seven novels were all action thrillers set in various international locations. In 1964 and 65, Lyall won the British Crime Writers’ Association’s Silver Dagger award, and he became chairman in 1966.

    Though he was not a prolific writer, attributing his slow pace to an obsession with technical accuracy, he published seventeen novels over a forty-year career span and mastered the genre of the espionage thriller.

    全編に流れる抒情性とページに流れる緩急の間が心地良い

    アクション・ミステリの古典であり基本書とも云われる本。５０年以上前に発表された作品ですが古臭さは全く感じません。戦後のヨーロッパの雰囲気が醸し出され、それが全編に流れる抒情性を生んでいる。そして、ハードボイルド独特の読後感に浸っています。

    イマドキの斬った張ったのミステリに比べるとプロットは割と平坦。結末も想定の範囲内。しかし、十分に楽しめました。ページに流れる緩急の「間」が心地良い。５０年の歳月にも埋もれない佳作。忘れかけた頃に再読してさりげない伏線や細部の描写を改めて味わいたいものです。そして何よりハードボイルドでしょう！

    タイトルの意味は不明なのだがキャラクターが魅力的で引き込まれる。

    こういった職業は現在でも有ると思われる。

    文体は長過ぎず簡潔で読みやすい。

    物語は数人の人物がＡ地点からＢ地点まで移動するだけという単純なものだ。

    使用される自動車や銃、道路状況などの細かい描写は説得力があり

    個人個人の心理的な変化に関してはハードボイルドだと言って良い。

    話はかなり古いですが、最近のミステリーの陳腐さにウンザリしていたので

    この作品に出会えてよかったと思います。

    本作はミステリーアクションで最後にどんでん返しが待っている展開です。

    意表を付く展開、ただの犯人を探すような作品でもなく、歴史背景等も描写していて楽しい作品でした。

    こういった良い作品は古い作品でもまだまだ出会えて居ない方が多いと思うので、迷ったら是非購入して頂きたいです。

    古い作品ですが、古臭さ等は感じない、読んでいて引き込まれる作品でした。

    10年以上前に図書館で借りて読み、とても印象に残っていたので、長い間、再読したいと思っていましたが、ようやく再読の機会がありました。読み始めるとやはり面白く、一気に読んでしまいました。ケインとジネット、ハーヴェイ、それに「女」として記述されるヘレンの4人のキャラクターは最高で、その仲間達に、終始、足を引っ張るマガンハルトの絡みがまた何とも言えないスリルを生んでいます。加えて、モーゼル銃、シトロエン、ロールスロイスといったアイテムも魅力的です。翻訳も素晴らしく、フランスからスイスの田舎道を走っている臨場感が凄い。これまで数多く読んできたエンターテイメント小説の中でも最高の作品の1つです。

    冒険アクション・エンターテインメントの最高傑作との世評が定着している本作。でも、私には少しも面白くなかった。読むのに、かなり時間がかかった（これがいかんのかな？）。

    まあ、私が馬鹿なこともあるんでしょう。でも、あれですよ、日本語でね、育った人間にはね、これはね、とてもとてもね、読みづらい、ですよ。英語で読めるといいのかもしれないが、日本人の言語感覚で英米の翻訳小説を読むのは苦しい、苦しい。これが傑作と思える方々はどんな言語生活をしてるんですかね？ちなみに、私は田舎で英語を教えて食ってる人間ですが。

    世の中で「傑作」「絶品」「珠玉の名作」と言われる作品は多いが、読んでみると「ええっ？違うぞ！これ！」っていうことが今までもよくありました。

    評論家の方々。どうか本当のことを言って下さい。特殊な趣味を持つ人ばかりではないんですよ、世の中は。時間がないんですよ、普通の職業人は。

    大家があるいは大勢が認めるから自分も誉めるというスノビズムで本当は大したこともない小説を持ち上げることは止めて下さい。自分の感覚で誠実に語って下さい。

    文化の違い、好みの違いで逃げないで下さい。「面白いものは洋の東西を問わない」じゃなかったんですか？さもなければ「お前が馬鹿だから分からんのだ」とハッキリ言って下さい。

    最後に言っておきます。翻訳ハードボイルドの気の利いたセリフは「何をひねくれた、衣紋掛け突っ張ったことを言ってるんだ！」と思い、ハードボイルドな描写は「何を気取ってるんだ、素直に言え！」と思う人間です、私は。まあ、馬鹿者の暴言に聞こえたでしょうなぁ。失礼しました。

    私にはどうも、ライアル初期の他の作品と比較すると主人公が好きになれません。

    他の主人公は、大抵借金まみれでその日その日を綱渡りで暮らしているのですが、

    この作品の主人公は比較的成功者の部類に入るのが気に入らないのかもしれません。

    ユーモアのセンスも若干欠ける気がします。
