    Raymond Thornton Chandler (July 23, 1888 – March 26, 1959) was a British-American novelist and screenwriter. In 1932, at age forty-four, Chandler decided to become a detective fiction writer after losing his job as an oil company executive during the Great Depression. His first short story, "Blackmailers Don't Shoot", was published in 1933 in Black Mask, a popular pulp magazine. His first novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939. In addition to his short stories, Chandler published seven novels during his lifetime (an eighth, in progress at the time of his death, was completed by Robert B. Parker). All but Playback have been made into motion pictures, some several times. In the year before he died, he was elected president of the Mystery Writers of America. He died on March 26, 1959, in La Jolla, California.

    Chandler had an immense stylistic influence on American popular literature. He is considered by many to be a founder, along with Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain and other Black Mask writers, of the hard-boiled school of detective fiction. His protagonist, Philip Marlowe, along with Hammett's Sam Spade, is considered by some to be synonymous with "private detective," both having been played on screen by Humphrey Bogart, whom many considered to be the quintessential Marlowe.

    Some of Chandler's novels are considered important literary works, and three are often considered masterpieces: Farewell, My Lovely (1940), The Little Sister (1949), and The Long Goodbye (1953). The Long Goodbye was praised in an anthology of American crime stories as "arguably the first book since Hammett's The Glass Key, published more than twenty years earlier, to qualify as a serious and significant mainstream novel that just happened to possess elements of mystery".

    一読した印象は、まず、不思議な小説だと言うもの。本の最後に「レイモンド・チャンドラーのこと」という訳者による文章が収録されているが、その中にも、ずっとチャンドラーを呼んできた人のこの本を読んだときの困惑の反応についてのエピソードが紹介されている。

    自分も、文体のせいなのか、ストーリーのせいなのか、何か不思議な感覚を受ける。暴力の場面の描写などもあるのだが、物語の中に入り込んで刺激を受けるような感じではないのである。

    主人公と夜警の男とのエピソード、手袋をはめた老人が主人公に語ったセリフなどが印象に残った。

    　チャンドラーの遺作らしいが、個人的には初読。長編はほぼ全作読んでる筈だが読み方の順番はそれで良かった。特に「長いお別れ」は先に読んで置いた方が良いと思われる。

    　ハードボイルドである事を差し引いてもミステリ成分はいつになく薄い。登場人物も舞台も少な目だし、何より謎解き要素がほとんどないのだ。逆にマーロウの魅力に比重が掛かっていると読んだが、やはりいつもと少し違う気がしたのは「遺作」だと思うからではないだろう。舞台となっているエスメラルダと言う架空？の都市では、警察もいつものように腐敗した悪徳警官の巣窟ではないようで、逆に正義感ある硬骨の警官が頼もしかったりする。マーロウはいつもの硬骨漢で有名な決めゼリフを口にするし、女に言い寄られても袖にしてしまう、かと思いきや本作ではとりあえず寝てしまっている。それでマーロウの魅力が落ちる訳ではなく、人間臭くて悪くないのだけど。

    　最後に以前求婚された女性から再び求婚されるシーンが出て来るのは、本筋と全く関係ないと思うのだが、他にも意味不明なシーンがかなりある。チャンドラーの、そしてマーロウのファンであればそれなりに興味深いのだけど、ミステリとしては高い評価は出来ない。

    　結論として、客観的に評価すれば凡作かも知れないが、チャンドラーファンとしては十分に読む価値がある作品だった。

    老人の言葉はチャンドラーの言葉だったんだろうと思う。優しいチャンドラーは最後に、優しいマーロウに愛しいひとと幸せになって欲しかったのだろう。まるでチャンドラー自身に重ねるように。

    前作までとは趣が異なる印象を受ける。

    マーロウは終始同じ場所を行ったり来たりでスリル感がないし、

    チャンドラー作品特有の登場人物の層の厚さも影を潜めている。

    そして事件解決のプロットもなく、ストーリー自体が短い。

    けれどこの作品は、探偵小説の要素などなくたっていい。

    チャンドラーのファンであれば、この本の随所に哀愁を感じ、

    彼のラストの作品であることに感慨を覚えるだろう。

    「強くなければ生きていけない、優しくなければ生きる資格がない」

    という名言が登場する作品だが、このセリフを目的に、まだチャンドラーを

    読んだことのない人が、いきなりこの作品を読むのはおすすめできない。

    前作をすべて読んでチャンドラーのファンになった人が、最後に手に取る

    べき本である。

    前作『長いお別れ』から4年半を経て、1959年に刊行された本作は、レイモンド・チャンドラーの七作目にして、最後の長編である。

    私立探偵のフィリップ・マーロウが、朝っぱらからかかってきた電話で叩き起こされるところから物語は始まる。

    電話の主は非道く高飛車な弁護士であった。その用件はワシントンから到着する特急電車に乗っている女を尾行し、落ち着き先を報告することだった。

    理由について一切の説明は無く、一方的ではあったが、依頼を引き受けたマーロウは女を尾けて特急電車に乗り込み、サン・ディエゴのエスメラルダに辿り着く。そしてマーロウは、敢えて自分から女に接触をしていく。

    『長いお別れ』がかなりのページ数だったのに対し、本作は最もページ数が少ない作品となっている。そして、その内容はこれまでの作品と大きく異なるところが多々有り、面食らってしまったというのが正直な感想だ。

    まずは舞台。チャンドラーの作品は、これまで一貫してハリウッドやロサンゼルスであった。しかし、本作では殆どがサン・ディエゴで展開されている。

    これは、チャンドラー自身がロスの変わりように嫌気が差し、1946年にサン・ディエゴ近くのカリフォルニア州ラ・ホヤに引越していたからだ。チャンドラーにとって、ロサンゼルスはもうマーロウが活躍するにはふさわしい場所ではなくなっていたのだ。

    そして現地の警察について取材を行なった際に、紳士的な警官の態度に感銘を受けたチャンドラーは、サン・ディエゴの警官たちを非常に立派な者たちのように描写している。ロスやベイシティの警官たちに対するものとは大違いだ。

    また、何故このようなことを書いたのかと、頭を捻らざるを得ないような奇妙なエピソードが非常に多い。

    例えばそれは、突然登場した老人がマーロウに神の存在や人生について長々と話して聞かせるところだったり、別な老人から昔聞いたことのあるエスメラルダに関する見解を不意に差し込んでみせたりなどである。

    そして、一番の違和感を覚えたのは、登場する女たちとマーロウが続けざまにベッドを共にし、しかも、これにしても物語には殆ど関わりはないのである。

    さらには、エンディングではマーロウが結婚でもするのではないかと匂わせたところで、プッツリと幕が引かれるのであった。

    このような作品になった背景としては、1954年に18歳年上の妻を亡くし、落ち込み、酒におぼれ体調を崩したことが挙げられるのかもしれない。

    翌1959年に『プードル・スプリングス物語』を執筆し始めたチャンドラーは、本作に於いて本当にマーロウを結婚させてしまった。

    しかし、第4章まで書いたところでチャンドラーは亡くなってしまい、その後をロバート・B・パーカーが引き継ぎ完成させている。

    だが、私は読む気になれず未読のままである。
