    孝謙天皇に関しては、もう少し違った解釈がされているかと思いましたが、そのままというか、橋本治がよく描くたおやかな天皇像から外れたヒステリックかつ頑ななばかりの女性で、ちょっと残念でした。

    道鏡も巷間のイメージどおりのガマ法師で。

    処女のおばあさんが世の男達を統べるという構造の滑稽さと愚かしさはそれはそれとして、もう少し女帝自身の視点に立った描写があっても良かったかな、と思います。聖武天皇とこの孝謙天皇に関しては、生まれが卓越しすぎているせいか、そこを強調した心理描写もいまひとつぴんと来ない嫌いがあります。それでも十分精密で面白いですが。

    天皇や他の皇族たちの心理と、それを取り巻く人々の中にある日本の（たぶん独特な）権威概念のようなものについてここまで詳しく長々と歴史的経過を辿ってある小説も他にないと思います。ある意味で日本史の核心に当たるここの部分に少しでも興味がある方なら、この本はほんとに必読だと思います。

    なんなのであろうか？」と疑問を抱き

    きっと帝である父もそれを所持しているはずであり

    そのもののなんであるかを知っているであろうと

    父に手紙を出すあたりは

    ベルトルッチの『ラストエンペラー』の溥儀を彷彿とさせます。

    藤原道長のその後

    藤原道長の繁栄の時代。とても緻密な文章でもって描ききっています。

    緻密すぎてわけわかんなくなったりしますが、わけがわからなくなるくらい

    藤の蔓は複雑巧妙に天皇家をからめとっていたのです。

    こうまで、延々と藤原家と天皇の歴史の語りにつきあっていると、「権力欲とはなにか？」

    がわかったように感じてしまいます。（そんな気がするだけで本当は、もちろん、

    わかっていません）

    あいかわらずですが、文章の緻密さと人物描写の立体感の完成度に関しては

    希有な書です。
