    山本健吉と池田彌三郎、の二人の国文学者、あるいはむしろ日本古代史家、が萬葉集に秘められた、飛鳥から奈良に至る大和朝廷の情景を、NHK大河風の歴史推理ドラマに、さりげなく仕上げている。大和朝廷の権力闘争と人間関係を、主要な登場人物の心情と行動を、萬葉集歌から推理描写しながら、読者に目撃させてくれる。

    近現代の中等教育で何か義務的にインプットされた萬葉集の存在が、日本史の紛れもない原点となっていることを推理ドラマを読む感覚で納得できるのではないだろうか。

    もしかすると、これまで和歌などに興味なかったという人ですら読み始めれば引き込まれるかもしれない。少し大げさかもしれないが、日本史の原点を目撃することで、現代日本人にも、この二千年の歴史の流れの中に生きる誇りと感動といった感情が新たに生まれてくるのではないだろうか？

    文芸評論家と国文学の大物が二人で傑作を選び、同じ歌を評するというスタイルです。もちろん二人とも傑作と認めた作品群ですから対立点はあまりありませんが、微妙なニュアンスや視点の違いが面白い訳です。手間のかかった贅沢な本の作り方に感心しました。現在絶版？勿体無いですね。
