    ローマ人の建築・美術・法学・学術・戦争の特異な才能のすべてを注入して、没落後かれらはエジプトから西欧東欧に修道院のネットワークを造り、それらの地の文明化を主導した。原始キリスト教に対するもっとも強い影響は、その法学思想によって死への憧憬を自己否定という禁欲的な論理に変換してしまったことである（私見）。繰り返し現れる千年紀王国への衝動を、死を対象化することによって日々の規律と労働、祈りによって克服する。下には魅力的な小見出しがならぶ。「客観主義と主観主義の動力学」「バイブルか剣か」絢爛たる歴史絵巻のなかに「米軍とナチス軍が争った高地の上に、かつて修道院があった」と語られる。将アイゼンハワー。フランスにある最古の修道の場が岩室であるとも。著者の面目躍如の節まわし。

    日本における中学や高校での世界史の授業は、四大文明、ギリシャ・ローマ時代、ゲルマン民像の大移動によるローマ帝国の分裂、となって中世になるわけですが、その時代についてそれ以前の事業の内容より希薄な内容で、教皇権が強大になることが記述されていて、うまく現代のヨーロッパの在り方とつながりません。しかし、本書を読み進めるうちに、ゲルマン社会とローマ帝国の政治そして、キリスト教の浸透などの絡みが少しずつ分かってきて、楽しくなりました。

    　東西分裂後のローマ帝国、東は「東洋的な」支配原理を取り込みつつ専制的国家に変容を遂げますが、西はゲルマン民族の越境に伴う混乱の中、ついに命脈を絶たれてしまいます。西ローマ帝国の崩壊は、西欧における古典文明時代の終焉を意味しましたが、それに代わる中世的秩序の確立は、一朝一夕に達成されたものではないようです。

    　本書は、高名な西洋史家の堀米教授が、ゲルマン的な部族国家がキリスト教会との連携の下に支配秩序を伸張させていく様に注目しつつ、中世的な封建制度を確立していく過程を描くものです。

    　上巻ではゲルマン民族の大移動から筆を起し、シャルルマーニュの戴冠までが対象です。そして教授は、シャルルマーニュによる神聖ローマの復興こそ、東ローマ皇帝による西欧聖俗両界への頚木を解く契機であり、古代文明崩壊から西洋中世社会成立に至る過程におけるクライマックスであると説きます。

    　ゲルマン的な自由戦士共同体が封建国家に移行していく様子や、ゲルマン社会のキリスト教受容の背景、メリヴィング朝からカロリング朝への交代における教会の役割など、興味深い論点が随所に登場します。また、西洋中世史の舞台となった都市等への紀行文が織り込まれており、ヨーロッパの歴史と地理に対する興味を刺激します。
