    岩波新書の歴史書は内容の確かさに定評があります。黒田日出男氏の文章は読みやすいので、堅苦しい専門書といったイメージはありませんでした。

    米沢市上杉美術館が所蔵している有名な国宝「洛中洛外図屏風」についての研究史を通して、各人の学説のポイントを整理して伝えています。それぞれの成果と疑問点を分かりやすく提示し、批判しながらも丁寧に解説した良書です。

    6曲1双の上杉本の「洛中洛外図屏風」には約2500人もの人々が描かれ、京都の様々なお寺や名所、祇園祭や当時の庶民の生活が精緻な絵で描かれています。戦国の世における洛中や洛外の風景描写が映し出されており、我が国の至宝と言えるでしょう。口絵としてカラーで紹介してありました。小さくて分かりませんが。

    章立ては、「謎」としての上杉本洛中洛外図、洛中洛外図の探究案内、研究史とその諸画期、「１５４７年の京都」説と反論・批判、「公方の構想」説と推理の立脚点、貴人の大行列と最初の仮説―永禄四年十二月二十三日、疑問と再考、史料の発見と「謎」の解決―永禄八年九月三日と天正二年三月、結論と新たな旅立ち、です。

    筆者の結論は199頁以降に記載してありますが、「将軍足利義輝が盟友上杉謙信に贈るために、永禄７年（1564）年末か同８年初めに、若き狩野源四郎（永徳）に命じて制作させていたもの」としています。史料を数多く扱ってきた東大史料編纂所教授ですので、その導きの過程で使用した「上杉年譜」の元となった「（謙信公）御書集」からの推論もまた見事でした。各種の洛中洛外図などを扱った経験に裏打ちされた深い洞察力と詳細な解説は知的好奇心をくすぐるものでした。

    　織田信長から上杉謙信に贈られたと伝わる『洛中洛外図屏風』（米沢市上杉博物館所蔵）について、歴史的方法論からアプローチした研究書。

    　前半では研究史の整理が行われる。

    　後半部で、依頼主は誰か、絵師は誰か、いつ制作されたのか、誰が誰に贈ったのかといった問題がひとつずつ解き明かされていく。歴史資料を丹念に検討し、もっとも妥当と思われる結論が引き出されていくのだが、黒田氏の主張である足利義輝の依頼で永徳が制作し、信長が上杉謙信に贈ったというのが現在でも通説になっているらしい。

    　研究の方法や過程が明確に示され、歴史学的美術史の格好の入門書ともなっている。

    今谷明の新説の登場で、論争が活発になった、洛中洛外図の上杉本について、

    歴史家、美術史家などの主要な説を分類、紹介した上で、

    日本中近世史としての立場から、自らの独自の見解を、最後に述べている。

    黒田によれば、美術的な観点からは、この絵が、狩野永徳によって描かれた、のはほぼ確実であり、

    今谷が疑いを持った、上杉家の文書は、上杉氏にとっての正史であり、その内容は尊重すべきであるとしている。
