    ドナウ川と運河について、少し詳しく知りたいと、思っていましたが、ほぼ期待した内容でした。

    ただし、運河のシステムなどに就いては、記述がほとんどありませんでした。

    歴史書の方てすね。

    若干古いが，東欧を旅行した気分になれる。マスターキートンが好きな人はおすすめ。

    日本エッセイストクラブ賞をとった本なので読み始めてみたが、ドナウ河を源流から下っていって、その歴史や風景について語るという、これからドイツへ旅行に行く人向けの本のようで、NHKの記者だった人が書いたもので、特に独自性のある本ではなく、エッセイストクラブはジャーナリストの集団なので、その縁故でとったものかなと思った。

    「紙幅の都合上文献表は思い切って割愛した」。思い切ったなら、全部掲載して欲しかった。紙幅の都合って何でしょう、本書は約230頁だが、約240頁あるものもある。10頁分文献表にしてもよい。とても残念。東西ドイツの統合に合わせて、時代を反映した記述になっているところが著者の自慢らしい。ドイツ、オーストリア以外は訪問したことがないので内容の妥当性はよくわからない。

    ドイツのシュバルツバルトの森から2900ｋｍ，８つの国を通過して旧ソ連のウクライナまで流れる大河。

    著者はこの河をくだりながら，諸民族の興亡，文化の往来，何よりもかけがえのない人々の生活を見つめる。冷戦で引き裂かれた世界が民主化の波で揺り戻しを受け，眠っていたドナウ世界が浮きあがってきた。著者は，それをまず確認する。

    国別の章立てになっているが，「ドイツ」では源流を巡る論争，「ニーベルンゲンの歌」の解説が興味をひく。「オーストリア」ではワインの産地ヴァッハウ，ウインナ・ワルツ，ウィーン料理（レティコバ夫人）の魅力とともにハプスブルク家盛衰の記述が面白い。「チエコスロバキア」では「プラハの春」を忘れてはならない。あわせて大戦後のドナウ改造計画の失敗が紹介されている。「ハンガリー」ではブダペシュトの美しさが語られる（25年ほど前に訪問）。「ユーゴ」では色濃いトルコの影響とともに，諸民族を国という単位でまとめる難しさを痛感する。「ブルガリア」では正教の布教に使われたキリール文字に関する知見を得る。「ルーマニア」ではローマの影響の強さを再認識する。

    そして，ソ連。豊かなドナウ下りが愉しめる一冊。

    　著者によれば、「中欧」とは単なる地理的概念(＝中央ヨーロッパ)ではなく、「ドナウ河にのぞむ国々、…“ドナウネットワーク”によって結ばれたきた国々」(p.76)であって、ミルン・クンデラを引用して「『中欧』の“境界を正確に引こうとすること無意味であろう。中欧は国家ではない。それは文化であり、運命である”」(p.74)と言う。

    　ドナウ源流のドイツから、オーストリア、チェコスロバキア、ハンガリー、ユーゴスラビア、ブルガリア、ルーマニア、ソ連と黒海に至るまでが紹介されていく。

    　ハプスブルグ帝国領としての結びつき、オスマン・トルコの支配と独立の歴史、両大戦による変動等により、「中欧」が発展し、また阻害されいった歴史が理解されるとともに、バルカン諸国の民族問題の根も明らかにされる。

    　こうした「中欧＝ドナウ世界」の案内である本書は、1991年刊であるため、ソ連邦は未だ健在、ユーゴスラビアの内戦は勃発したばかり、チェコとスロバキアは分裂前であり時事性に欠けることは否めない。しかし、それを割り引いても、十分に新鮮で興味深い好著と言えよう。

    　表題にそう書いたが、もうソ連、ユーゴスラビア、チェコスロバキアという国はない。やはり本書は１９９１年１０月刊行である。その２か月後にソ連は消滅した。他の二つも追随して消滅した。時代を感じさせる。でもそういう即応性こそないものの本書は流域国家の自然地理にはじまり、短いながらも歴史をそれも通史で説明してくれるので、旅行好きな人はありがたい本であろう。副題も「東欧・中欧の歴史と文化」とある。　本書を読めば、我が国に居ながらにして流域国家を旅してきた気分になれるであろうこと、請け合いである。

    　しかし、本書が２５年前（今は２０１６年６月。）に書かれて、かくも世界地図が変わろうと誰が予測できたであろう。そう考えて本書に目をやると感慨深いものがある。案外、ある意味、時代遅れになったことに意義を見出せるかもしれない。本書のリニューアル版ができれば比較がこの目でできるので、是非とも、そのような企画が出ることが待ち遠しい。
