Wind River Unveils Linux Distro for AI and Critical Workloads
VIENNA — Wind River Systems, a longtime leader in embedded operating systems and mission-critical systems, on Tuesday announced the launch of eLxr Pro, (pronounced “exlir”), its new commercial enterprise Linux offering designed for AI and processing-intensive workloads.
This release, announced at Open Source Summit Europe, marks a significant milestone for the company, which has been at the forefront of embedded software innovation for more than 40 years.
Wind River emerged in the 1980s as the company behind VxWorks, a high-performance real-time operating system. In its early days, VxWorks became a cornerstone of embedded computing and was used by NASA for several of its Mars missions.
Since then, Wind River entered the embedded Linux market with the mouthful of a name, “Platform for Network Equipment-Linux Edition,” in 2004. After it retired that program, it introduced Wind River Linux, which was developed from the Yocto Project. Wind River used all these in its embedded system markets, which range from spacecraft to cars to medical devices to factory equipment.
The newly unveiled eLxr Pro is meant for a different market. Built to address the growing demands of AI, machine learning, and computer vision applications, eLxr Pro is meant to offer a robust, flexible platform that scales for critical workloads from enterprise to edge.
ELxr Pro is “designed to provide a robust, reliable and right-sized binary distribution for developers,” said Derek Straka, Wind River’s director of product management, in his keynote at Open Source Summit Europe.
“This means it’s an operating system that moves from the edge all the way back to the core. ELxr Pro guides us through those various requirements and components to create that edge decor ecosystem and ensures that each of the elements is going to create a unified solution.”
Built on eLxr
This new commercial Linux distro is built on eLxr, a Debian-based community Linux. It comes with a set of “distro-to-order” tools that enable you to deploy it on the edge or as a server. Its heart is a small, fundamentals-only kernel designed for better performance, optimized workloads, and a smaller attack surface.
Being a Wind River operating system it also comes with real-time, preempt-rt kernel configurations to prioritize low-latency responses, ensuring that tasks are executed within precise time boundaries. It’s also worth noting that after 20 years in the making, preempt-rt will finally make it into the next release of the mainline Linux kernel, Linux 6.12.
The enterprise version comes with support for the operating system itself and for cloud native programs such as Kubernetes. Its support options go all the way up to 24/7 service and 10 years of CVE patching and maintenance.
Pro comes in two different packages. The first, eLxr Server Pro is suited for customers deploying public cloud, regional data center, near edge, distributed cloud and intelligent edge implementations. The version works on x86 and Arm architectures. It’s also available on Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud via the the AWS Marketplace.
The second, eLxr Edge Pro, is meant for customers deploying embedded devices, intelligent edge, on-premises edge, intelligent gateway and intelligent sensor implementations. This edition runs on Arm and RISC-V architectures.
ELxr Pro’s launch has garnered support from industry leaders. Intel, a longtime Wind River partner, is collaborating to leverage technologies such as Intel Gaudi 3 AI accelerator and OpenVINO to enhance end-user experiences with deep learning models.
As industries continue to transform toward AI and edge systems, Wind River is positioning eLxr Pro to play a crucial role in powering the next generation of AI-driven applications and critical infrastructure. Given Wind River’s track record, customers in either of these hot infrastructure markets would be well advised to give it a try.
