BREAKING: The House rejected a bill Thursday to keep the government funded temporarily, after Republican leaders reneged on an earlier bipartisan deal and made modifications to appease President-elect Donald Trump, billionaire Elon Musk and an internal GOP revolt.
The vote was 174-235, with one Democrat voting present, falling far short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass it under a fast-track process.
The vote leaves Congress without a clear plan to avoid a looming government shutdown with less than 30 hours left before the deadline, driving up the odds of a funding lapse just ahead of the holidays.

A federal judge in Georgia has ordered former defamation attorney L. Lin Wood to give the court $2 million in cash as well as two properties he owns to secure a bond as he appeals a multimillion dollar judgment levied against him for defaming his former law partners.
Wood found himself on the defendantโs end of the legal system after a lengthy feud with his erstwhile colleagues about money. The lead attorney in the failed effort in Georgia to overturn the 2020 presidential election, Wood surrendered his law license in July 2023 after battling disbarment proceedings for years.
Attorneys Nicole Wade, Jonathan Grunberg, and Taylor Wilson have had it out with Wood since February 2020 over the terms of their departure from his law firm. Biden, reportedly meant to be in Delaware until Christmas, also returned to the White House. NEW: The Biden administration is canceling another $4.28 billion in student loan relief for about 54,900 borrowers who work in public service, the White House announced on Friday.
This will likely be one of the final rounds of relief Biden delivers before President-elect Trump takes office next month. The incoming administration is not expected to prioritize debt forgiveness.
The Biden administration has now forgiven nearly $180 billion for 4.9 million borrowers.
Friday's action, through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, will provide relief to borrowers who are teachers, firefighters and members of law enforcement and meet certain qualifications.

Sum of All Fears: The National Football League is calling on Congress to act immediately as America's drone crisis threatens to impact major sporting events.
Speculation over the source of unexplained drone sightings has reached fever pitch in recent weeks, and the NFL is keen to use the publicity to secure its stadiums as the Super Bowl fast approaches.
Earlier this year, the huge AFC title game between the Chiefs and Ravens had to be temporarily stopped for safety reasons when a man flew a drone over the stadium in Baltimore.
In fact, the league claims that 'threats, incidents and incursions by unauthorized drones over NFL games jumped from 12 in 2017 to more than 2,800 in 2023'.
In a statement, the NFL's senior vice president of security Cathy Lanier has called on Congress to take steps to prevent further incidents from occurring.
'Over the past several years, an increasing number of drones have flown into restricted airspace during NFL games,' she said.

๐คPresident-elect Donald Trump this week transferred his entire stake of shares in Trump Media to a revocable trust of which he is the sole beneficiary, regulatory filings revealed Thursday evening.
Trump did not receive any money for the gift of his 114,750,000 shares of Trump Media stock to the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust on Tuesday, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Because Trump is the beneficiary of the trust, he now โindirectlyโ owns the Trump Media shares he transferred, the SEC filing noted.
The president-electโs son, Donald Trump Jr., is the sole trustee of the trust, and has sole voting and investment power over securities held by the entity, according to a separate SEC filing Thursday.
Trump Media, which trades under the DJT ticker, closed at $35.41 per share Thursday, making the value of the transferred stock more than $4 billion.
Trump, who is set to be sworn in as president for a second non-consecutive term on Jan. 20, had been the largest individual shareholder in the social media company, which operates the Truth Social app. His stake represented nearly 53% of the companyโs outstanding shares.
