Russian general makes rare call to top U.S. military leader
Russia’s top general called chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Charles Q Brown Jr. last week as both countries grapple with a changing war in Ukraine.
Gen. Valery Gerasimov, the architect of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, spoke with Brown about how to manage escalation concerns between the two countries.
Russia recently launched a new intermediate-range ballistic missile into Ukraine that has nuclear capabilities. Russian leader Vladimir Putin said the launch was in response to Ukraine’s usage of longer-range weapons supplied by the United States and the United Kingdom.
It’s believed this was Gerasimov’s first call with Brown, at least since he was elevated to chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His first call with the top American general since the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley, spoke with him in October 2022, the year of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., spoke with Chief of Russian General Staff Gen. Valery Gerasimov by phone on Nov. 27 following a request by the Russian Ministry of Defense,” Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesman Navy Capt. Jereal Dorsey told the Washington Examiner.
“This was the first time the leaders spoke since Gen. Brown became chairman,” he added. “The leaders discussed a number of global and regional security issues to include the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. At the request of Gen. Gerasimov, Gen. Brown agreed to not proactively announce the call.”
In the call, Gerasimov told Brown that Russia planned to use its Oreshnik ballistic missile well before the Biden administration had authorized Ukraine to use American Army Tactical Missile Systems to hit targets deeper into Russia.

HERE WE GO😑: An Ohio hospital was in panic last night after a patient who had recently arrived from Africa was rushed to its ER with a flu-like illness.
The individual was quarantined when staff learned the patient had traveled from Tanzania, which borders the Democratic Republic of Congo, where a mystery disease outbreak has killed dozens.
But in an update this morning, a spokesperson for the hospital said the patient's condition was found to be 'routine' and not linked to the outbreak. They have now been removed from isolation.
The response, however, highlights growing concerns around the situation in the DRC that has so far sickened at least 376 people and killed up to 143.
Hong Kong yesterday became the first territory to bring in health checks for travelers arriving from Africa, requiring passengers to take temperature tests upon arrival. Several flights arrive in the US from Africa every day, including in New York City, Atlanta and Washington DC.
Patients infected with the mystery disease are reported to be suffering from a flu-like illness, with symptoms including a fever, headache, nasal discharge, cough, difficulty breathing and anemia, or lack of healthy red blood cells.
The country's Health Minister Roger Kamba told reporters yesterday that his nation was on 'maximum alert' over the outbreak, and added that the disease appeared to be 'respiratory'.
A team from the World Health Organization is in the area conducting tests to identify the disease behind the outbreak, with results expected in the coming days.

Romania’s Constitutional Court on Friday canceled the final round of a pivotal presidential election with only two days before the vote, saying it needed to ensure the “correctness of the electoral process.” The surprise decision was the latest in a series of political upheavals across Europe, where right wing movements across the European Union are in the ascendancy.
The front-runner in Sunday’s now canceled election had been Calin Georgescu, an ultranationalist whose victory in a first-round vote late last month stunned Romania’s political establishment.
George Simion, a far-right leader who had endorsed Mr. Georgescu, denounced the court ruling, saying “a coup is underway,” but he urged supporters not to take to the street in protest. “The system must fall democratically,” Mr. Simion said.
The court gave no explanation for its decision, and it was not clear when a new first round would take place. “The electoral process for the president of Romania will be entirely redone,” it said in a statement.
The move set off angry reaction among right-wing groups on social media but was welcomed by the prime minister, Marcel Ciolacu, the leader of the governing Social Democrats and a losing candidate in the opening round of the presidential vote.

BREAKING: A federal appeals court sided with the Justice Department on Friday and upheld a law that would ban TikTok in the U.S. if the video-sharing app is not sold by Jan. 19.
The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals denied TikTok’s request to review the law.
TikTok and its parent company ByteDance had sued to block the law in May, arguing that it suppresses speech by banning a platform used by more than half the U.S. population.

Secret Service sources are incensed over this chaotic screaming match between Acting Secret Service Director Ron Rowe and Rep. Pat Fallon.
They are telling me that they view Rowe's angry repsonse as a pure deflection - Rowe is saying that he had a right to move the top agents assigned to protect Pres. Biden and VP Harris out of the protection line of duty because he worked either on or after 9/11 helping sift through the debris of the World Trade Center.
This makes absolutely no sense, these sources say.
While that work is honorable, and the nation owes him a debt of gratitude because it likely involved trying to find any survivors and body parts, I'm told hundreds of Secret Service agents were called in to do that work in the weeks after 9/11. That work involved going to what is called the FreshKills landfill -- it was not at the World Trade Center itself.
I have several questions into the Secret Service press office to clarify exactly what 9/11 work Rowe was referring to and when it occurred.
Also, being assigned to work on or after 9/11 has nothing to do with why he chose to be in 9/11 the photo op and change protective protocol by moving the top protective agents farther away from Biden and Harris so he could be prominently seen.
Fallon rightly asked if he was jeopardizing Biden's and Harris's lives by doing so, and whether he had a gun or a radio on him.
During the screaming match, Rowe said he had a gun and a radio and claimed the protective mission wasn't compromised.
Sources say it's hard to tell if he had a gun on him during the 9/11 ceremony photograph that Fallon showed, but he's not wearing an earpiece, and that means he was not in a protective posture and likely did not have radio on him.

Investigators are days away from DNA results in evidence connected to the shooter who gunned down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, The Post has learned.
The potential DNA evidence has been recovered from a water bottle believed to have been dropped by the masked gunman as he fled from shooting Thompson outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown, as well as bullets from the scene, sources said.
A Starbucks coffee cup from the shooter is also being processed for DNA evidence, according to sources.
The manhunt for the shooter — which entered its third day Friday — has involved investigators tracking his movements across New York City going back to his apparent arrival on Nov. 24 on a bus from Atlanta pulling into Port Authority.

BREAKING: The jury in the trial of Daniel Penny told a judge Friday morning that it could not come to a unanimous decision on the top charge of manslaughter. It is not yet clear, but this trial may be declared a mistrial.
Penny is charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the May 2023 chokehold death of Jordan Neely. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of the top charge. He has pleaded not guilty.
Jurors, who have been deliberating since Tuesday afternoon, sent a note to Judge Maxwell Wiley stating that they have not been able to agree on a verdict for the manslaughter charge. The jury was previously instructed that it must come to a unanimous decision on that charge before it can be allowed to consider the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide.
Wiley told the jury that he would confer with defense attorneys and prosecutors before issuing further guidance.

House Republican leadership met on Friday morning to discuss outstanding disagreements on how to kick off the reconciliation process, according to two senior Republicans, granted anonymity to share the private deliberations.
House Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.) was in Speaker Mike Johnson’s office for at least an hour around Friday morning’s vote series. Johnson’s senior policy adviser, Derek Theurer, who was previously chief tax counsel for the Ways and Means committee, was seen exiting the speaker’s office during that period.
According to people who participated in the conversation, the focus of the discussion was how to address disagreements between Smith and incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) on how to kick off the reconciliation process, which would allow Republicans to pass trillions of dollars of tax cut extensions without Democratic support.

NBC😆: Foreign leaders have lined up to speak with him. He has rattled Mexico and Canada with threats of steep tariffs and warned there would be “hell to pay” for militants in Gaza unless they release the hostages by the time he’s sworn in.
That won't happen for another 45 days, but Donald Trump, the president-in-waiting, isn't shying away from acting like the president-in-reality.
Trump can't sign a bill or issue an executive order yet, but he is crowding out Joe Biden as the sitting president winds down his term and steadily recedes from public view. In two foreign trips since the election, Biden has answered all of two questions from reporters.
He has been left to kibitz about Trump’s pronouncements — “I hope he rethinks it,” he said of Trump’s plan to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico — rather than drive an agenda of his own.
As for Trump, “his view is that he’s not going to follow rules that he thinks are stupid rules,” said a former senior White House official in Trump’s first term. “His view is these are hostages and if he can help bring them home, then why would he follow protocol if it’s going to impact peoples’ lives?”
At this point, Trump is “already basically running things, and he’s not even president yet,” the person added.

BS from Politico🙄: As Richard Grenell made a bid after the election to be Donald Trump’s secretary of State, a flurry of social media posts from MAGA influencers started popping up, advocating for the president-elect to pick him.
Around the same time, an associate of Grenell had approached conservative social media influencers, according to two people with knowledge of the situation, offering paid contracts of as much as five figures to post favorably about Grenell.
One such contract, obtained by POLITICO and not previously reported, outlined that the influencer would do so during “peak posting times,” that “content must appear genuine,” and it could not “appear as an overt advertisement or promotional message.”
The proposed paid social media campaign, which the organizers told POLITICO never took off, illustrates the lengths to which people close to Grenell went to ensure he got the job. And Grenell, who typically goes by Ric, had made no secret in private conversations over the last three years that he wanted to serve as Trump’s next secretary of State. He told people in Trump’s orbit that it was secretary of State “or bust,” as one person close to the president-elect said.

Bird flu has infected more than 500 dairy herds in top milk state California, and more than 700 nationwide since March, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, raising concerns of the impact to farmers and the milk supply as well as the risk to human health from ongoing spread.
Nearly 60 people have contracted the virus since April, most of them workers on infected poultry and dairy farms, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The symptoms have been mild and CDC officials have said the risk to the general public from bird flu is low.
The USDA first announced it would begin national milk testing in October after a push from industry and veterinary groups for stronger surveillance of the virus, but had not detailed the extent of the program or how it would be implemented.
The testing plan, which will involve monthly or weekly sample collection from bulk milk tanks and dairy processors, will be rolled out first in California, Colorado, Michigan, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Oregon, Vilsack said.
The latter three states have not reported bird flu infections in dairy cattle.

The raw milk brand favored by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is facing a recall in California over safety concerns just as the CEO is poised to join the Trump administration at the behest of the former independent presidential candidate.
Mark McAfee, CEO of Raw Farm, says he was asked by Kennedy’s running mate Nicole Shanahan to apply for a role at the Food and Drug Administration as a “raw milk adviser.”
The California Department of Public Health issued its latest voluntary recall against the company this week after several batches of raw milk products tested positive for H5N1, or bird flu. With the virus spreading rampantly among California’s dairy herds, McAfee said it was his farm’s turn to have some positive tests. He said it will take around two months for the virus to move through his herd before they build antibodies and develop immunity. Until then, he said he is focused on feeding the cows, keeping them healthy and working with a farm with no infections 300 miles north in order to keep raw milk, cream, kefir, butter and cheese on shelves.
And he said that while he’s been working closely with state agencies, he feels they’re being pressured by federal bureaucrats back East. Regulators like the FDA are using avian flu as an excuse, he said, to take action against raw milk.

The Guardian: Elon Musk has emerged as the sole financial architect behind a provocative political action committee that appropriated the name of late US supreme court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to bolster Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, according to federal campaign finance reports released on Thursday.
The RBG Pac, funded entirely by the world’s richest man with a $20.5m donation in the final two weeks of the campaign, ran advertisements and mailers suggesting an ideological alignment between Trump and Ginsburg on abortion.
That’s a narrative that Clara Spera, the justice’s granddaughter, denounced as fundamentally misleading.
“The use of her name and image to support Donald Trump’s re-election campaign, and specifically to suggest that she would approve of his position on abortion, is nothing short of appalling,” she told the New York Times in October.
The RBG Pac’s strategic advertising push arrived at a critical political moment, following months of Democratic attacks on Trump’s abortion stance. Its website featured a photo of Trump and Ginsburg with the caption “Great Minds Think Alike” – a claim that directly contradicts Ginsburg’s well-documented judicial philosophy and her personal opposition to Trump.

FINALLY, THE TRUTH IS COMING OUT: A Kentucky judge shot dead by a sheriff in his office ran it 'like a brothel' and was seen having sex with a 'girl' there, it is claimed.
District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, was allegedly seen with the unidentified female in the same chambers where he was shot and killed by Letcher County Sheriff Shawn 'Mickey' Stines, 43, in September.
The allegation against him was made by Sabrina Adkins, a woman who was raped by one of Stines' deputies, Ben Fields, according to NewsNation.
'I seen Judge Mullins having sex with a girl... In his office, in the judge’s chambers,' she said in a newly-obtained recording.
Adkins can be also heard saying that Fields 'does have some videotapes of some stuff in the judge’s chambers… just with girls, sexual and stuff.'
She alleged that the tapes featured Fields and 'some higher ups' in the chambers having sex, suggesting there may be as-yet unidentified others involved in the sextortion scam.
Adkins said in a federal lawsuit that she could not afford to pay for an ankle monitor and did not want to return to Letcher County Jail.
Fields then coerced her into performing sexual favors so she could remain under home incarceration, according to a federal lawsuit in 2022.

Stines was accused in a lawsuit of not properly training and supervising ex-deputy Fields, who served six months in jail after he coerced Adkins, who was on home incarceration, into sex for favors in Judge Mullins's chambers.
Stiles has admitted to the shooting but pleaded not guilty to murder, arguing 'it was something that occurred in the heat of passion' and at most represented manslaughter.
His attorney has alluded that his defense will be based on a lawsuit involving Stiles' former Deputy Sheriff Ben Fields, who pleaded guilty to using his position to extort sex from women.
