Albulena Haxhiu[b] (born 11 May 1987) is a Kosovar politician who has been the acting president of Kosovo since 2026.[1] Haxhiu has been the Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo since 2026. She was the Minister of Justice of Kosovo in 2020 and again from 2021 to 2025.[2][3]

Early life

[change | change source]

Albulena Haxhiu was born on 11 May 1987 in Pristina, then the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.[4] Her grandfather was Kosovar political activist Ahmet Haxhiu.[5]

Haxhiu studied law and finance at the University of Pristina.[2] She then studied criminal law at the South East European University in Tetovo.[6]

Political career

[change | change source]

Haxhiu started her career as a member of Vetëvendosje (LVV). She was elected as a member of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo in 2010. She was re-elected in 2014, 2017, and 2019.[4]

After LVV became the largest party in the Assembly in 2019, Haxhiu became the Minister of Justice in February 2020, having been hired by Prime Minister Albin Kurti in his first cabinet. She only served until June 2020 after the government lost a no-confidence vote.[7] After LVV won more seats in the 2021 local elections, Haxhiu was re-hired as Minister of Justice in the second Kurti cabinet.[4]

Assembly Speaker

[change | change source]

Even though the LVV lost seats in the February 2025 parliamentary election, Haxhiu was picked as the party's candidate for Assembly speaker. However, after other parties blocked her candidacy, Dimal Basha was elected instead in August 2025.[8] After the December 2025 parliamentary election, Haxhiu was elected as speaker by a vote of 66-44.[9]

Acting presidency

[change | change source]

After President Vjosa Osmani's term expired in April 2026 and since no new president was elected, Haxhiu automatically became acting president as speaker of the Assembly. She will serve until a new president is elected, or for at most six months.[10][11] On 28 April, the Assembly again failed to elect a president. As a result, it was dissolved and new elections are to be held.[12]

Personal life

[change | change source]

Haxhiu is married and has three children.[3][7] Haxhiu's husband, Alban Krasniqi, was a candidate for mayor of Malishevë in 2013, 2021 and 2025.[13][14]
