Create messages needed to translate "Exit the editor" survey and complete translation for Phase 2 languages
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

T422931 implemented an initial version of the "Exit the editor" survey.

This task involves the work of readying the UI that is present within this initial version for translations so that we can proceed with starting a second round of the survey in T426132.

Process

  1. EdEng makes all user-facing strings translatable
  2. EdEng adds all user-facing strings to Column A within the text / string for translation tab of this spreadsheet
  3. EdEng assigns this task to @dchen
  4. @dchen initiates translation process

Requirements

Translation messages

  • All user-facing strings that appear within the β€œExit the editor” survey are translatable and entered into Column A within the text / string for translation tab of this spreadsheet
    • E.g. survey prompt, answer options, instructional text, button labels, etc.
  • All other aspects of the initial implementation ought remain unchanged
    • E.g. survey activating conditions, survey answer order, etc.
  • QQQ messages are defined so translators can ensure meaning/intent is aligned with what we intend

Priority languages
100% of the "Exit the editor" survey UI is translated into the following languages

Per today's offline discussion with @bmartinezcalvo, @dchen, and @TAndic, we're going to translate the survey via MoveComms/Design Research.

I've updated the Requirements include what's needed to make this happen.

Change #1291108 had a related patch set uploaded (by DLynch; author: DLynch):

[mediawiki/extensions/MobileFrontend@master] Localize the editor abandonment survey

Translations were forwarded last week to @ppelberg!

Thus far translatewiki has localized it into: az, de, fi, gl, ia, ko, lb, ms, so.

Is there some way to see the survey having more than 100 edits? Or can you at least give the list of strings? (I don't have access to the document)
Me and @Mitte27 would be happy to translate it to Russian on Translatewiki.

@Wellverywell you can see all the strings in the green lines in this file in the patch: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/extensions/MobileFrontend/+/1291108/3/i18n/en.json

You can also trigger it on any page if you have access to the browser console. So:

  1. visit e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frog?useformat=mobile
  2. open the console and enter: mw.config.set({wgMFEnableAbandonSurvey:true,wgUserEditCount:1}); mw.storage.remove('mf-abandon-survey/shown');
  3. press a pencil icon to edit the page
  4. press the close button on the editor

You'll see:

CleanShot 2026-06-02 at 14.17.14@2x.png (1,008Γ—1,052 px, 184 KB)

You can also look directly on translatewiki -- go to https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Special:Translate?group=ext-mobilefrontend&language=ru&filter=&action=translate and enter "abandon-survey" in the search box at the top of the list.

Wow. We'd greatly value your help, @Wellverywell and @Mitte27! Could you please let us know if you run into any issues ?

Translations were forwarded last week to @ppelberg!

Thank you for this update, @dchen! When do you think it'd be realistic for us to receive translations back?

@ppelberg AFAIK Mitte has posted all the Russian translations to Translatewiki (and plans on Ukrainian too).
