'83 Niigata Expo Commemorative Admission Ticket 🚅
Issued by Niigata Railway Operating Division / July 1, 1983 (Showa 58) Niigata Station
A commemorative admission ticket issued on the first day of the '83 Niigata Expo, held to celebrate the opening of the Joetsu Shinkansen. With the bustling expo and the 200 series Shinkansen lined up on the front, and venue information packed on the back, this single ticket preserves the intensity of the summer of 1983 just as it was. 🎫

[Content and Commentary] 🧐
○ A regional exposition held in the wake of the opening of the Joetsu Shinkansen (1982/Showa 57). This commemorative admission ticket was issued to coincide with the first day of the expo on July 1 of the following year, 1983 (Showa 58).
○ The theme was "Seeking Niigata's New Leap and Potential," and the catchphrase was "Green Breeze, Time to Take Flight."
○ The event ran for 62 days from July 1 (Fri) to August 31 (Wed), 1983 (Showa 58). The venue was Oyamasu, Niigata City (approx. 132,000 m²).
○ The front of the ticket features an illustration of the venue pavilions with their impressive triangular roofs, lined up with the 200 series Shinkansen. The design highlights the excitement of the Shinkansen opening.

○ The pavilions consisted of 12 buildings.
Starting with the Tomorrow's Niigata Pavilion (Theme Pavilion), there was a diverse lineup including the International Friendship Pavilion, National Tourism and Products Pavilion, Nature of Earth and Sea Pavilion, Rich Land Pavilion, Fureai Plaza, Energy Dome, High-Speed Railway Pavilion, Future Information Pavilion, Suntory Pavilion, BSN Pavilion (Miracle Cine Dome), Harbin Friendship Exhibition Pavilion, and Electronics Pavilion.
○ As the name "High-Speed Railway Pavilion" clearly indicates, the focus of the expo was on celebrating the opening of the Shinkansen.
○ The mascot character is "Paku-chan."
It is said to be a design that fuses the crested ibis (toki), the prefectural bird of Niigata, with the round nose (leading car) of the Joetsu Shinkansen that opened the previous year (1982).
It is also said that the name "Paku" was derived from "Haku" (Expo). Various goods such as soft vinyl dolls, piggy banks, and commemorative medals were produced, and it was loved by children at the time as a pioneer of yuru-chara (mascot characters).
○ The ticket stub on the far right contains the text: "General Admission Ticket / Cannot enter passenger cars. / Valid for one use only on the day of sale." This is a practical ticket that was actually used for admission at Niigata Station.
📖 A "Cross-section of History" told by paper
One year after the opening of the Joetsu Shinkansen—Niigata was buzzing.
A 62-day summer welcomed by triangular-roofed pavilions, 12 exhibition halls, and Paku-chan.
This small admission ticket still seals in the "expectations for the future" of that era just as they were. 😌
