⚫︎ The 1:50,000 topographic maps issued by the Land Survey Department were national base maps developed starting in the Meiji era. Due to its nature, Sado Island was recorded across multiple map sheets.
This sheet was carefully joined by someone so that the entire island could be viewed at once; it is not a commercial product, but rather a "custom map" tailored to the owner's needs.
⚫︎ The legend covers symbols for national infrastructure and military facilities from the Meiji to Taisho eras, including shrines, Buddhist temples, Western churches, parks, military facilities, arsenals, bamboo groves, volcanoes, mineral springs, mining sites, survey markers, post and telegraph offices, police stations, courts, prisons, and customs houses.
Although it is a topographic map, one can read the layout of the governance, military, and industry of that time.
