A complete set housed in an ochre-colored box—when opened, it reveals land use maps color-coded by 13 wide-area living zones within Niigata Prefecture: Murakami, Shibata, Niigata, Gosen, Sanjo-Tsubame, Nagaoka-Koide, Kashiwazaki, Muikamachi, Tokamachi, Joetsu, Itoigawa, and Sado. 😲
A set of administrative land use planning maps produced by Niigata Prefecture based on data as of December 31, 1974.
[Explanation of Contents, etc.]
⚫︎ The box has a label reading "Niigata Prefecture Land Use Basic Planning Map" and contains a location map of the prefecture, (1) a summary map, and (2-1 to 13) individual wide-area living zone maps (Murakami, Shibata, Niigata, Gosen, Sanjo/Tsubame, Nagaoka/Koide, Kashiwazaki, Muikamachi, Tokamachi, Joetsu, Itoigawa, Sado).

⚫︎ The summary map is at a scale of 1:200,000. It is color-coded into five categories: urban areas (red), agricultural areas (yellow), forest areas (green), natural park areas (blue), and nature conservation areas (purple). For reference, urbanization promotion areas, urbanization control areas, agricultural promotion areas, national forests, protection forests, special areas, and special protection districts are also indicated.

⚫︎ Each map contains a statement noting, "This map is a reproduction of the 1:200,000 scale topographic map published by the Geographical Survey Institute, with the approval of the Director-General of the Geographical Survey Institute of the Ministry of Construction," indicating that the structure consists of land use classifications printed over the Geographical Survey Institute's topographic maps.

⚫︎ Prepared by Fujinami Publishing Co., Ltd. (Gakko-cho, Niigata City).
Below is an introduction to some of the maps.
⚫︎ In Map (1), the Niigata wide-area living zone map, the urbanization promotion area (red) spreads in a band along the flow of the Shinano River, and the boundary with the surrounding agricultural area (yellow) is clearly drawn.

⚫︎ In Map 13, the Sado wide-area living zone map, the contrast between the yellow (agricultural area) of the urban area centered on Ryotsu and the green/blue (forest/natural park areas) of the Osado and Kosado mountain ranges is vivid, allowing one to understand the island's land use structure at a glance.

📖 A "cross-section of history" told by paper
In 1975, Niigata Prefecture depicted how it would use its own land on color-coded maps.
The future of Niigata Prefecture as envisioned by the administration at the time—how it would classify urban, agricultural, forest, and natural environments and draw its future image after the period of high economic growth—is quietly folded away inside this set. 😌
