When you think you are "right," stop for a moment
Recently, I read a certain phrase and couldn't help but groan in realization.
The kanji for "right" (tadashii). If you look closely, it is made by combining "one" (ichi) and "stop" (tomaru).
One, stop.
Inside the word "right," there is a message to "stop for a moment."
The moment we think, "I am right," we become the most self-centered.
Our voices get louder. We stop compromising. We want to defeat the other person in an argument.
But the very character for "right" is telling us to "stop once."
Inside the word "right," there is a "stop."
When you think you are right, that is exactly when you should stop.
Perhaps true righteousness lies in that.
Before pushing through with your own sense of rightness, stop once. Try listening to the other person's story one more time.
I think that "pause" is probably the most important thing.
So today, if there is a moment when you are convinced that "I am right."
