Corpus Callosum Deficiency Life Hacks Part 21 | Easily excited and easily bored—but some things never change.
I tend to get really into things, but I also lose interest just as quickly.
There are many moments in my daily life where I think that's true. But at the same time, there are things I've loved since I was a child that have never changed. The phrase easily excited and easily bored feels like it describes a part of me, but I also feel like it doesn't describe the whole picture.
My favorites change constantly. But there are also favorites that never change.
My favorite celebrities change with every project.
When an interesting actor appears in a movie, I'll follow their work for a while. But when someone else catches my eye in the next project, I've moved on to them before I know it. You might think, Did you change your mind again? but I am genuinely fond of them at that particular moment. On the other hand, there is a celebrity I have continued to support since I was a child. For decades. I find this difference strange myself, and I don't know exactly why this person alone never changes. However, the fact that
sometimes I don't lose interest is certainly true. The fact that I can't sum myself up in one word as just being easily excited and easily bored might be part of my complexity.
When things don't last, it's not about willpower, but because it's "not a good fit."
I once decided to start keeping a diary. I decided to write three lines a day—that was the rule I set for myself.
I managed to write for the first few days. But when every day is the same, I start to run out of things to write. When days go by where I think, Nothing special happened today either the motivation to open the diary fades. Before I knew it, I had stopped.
I've had similar experiences with studying for certifications. I tried studying for the Electrician and Health Officer exams, but both required a lot of memorization, and I gave up halfway through. For bookkeeping, the online instructor's teaching style didn't suit me, so I've currently put that on hold.
What these experiences show is that there is a reason why things don't last. Nothing changes, too much memorization, the teaching style doesn't fit—there is a reason for each one. I feel that the perspective of it didn't last because my willpower is weak is less accurate than the perspective of it didn't last because it wasn't a good fit for me.
When you lose interest, move on. That, too, is a way of knowing yourself.
On the other hand, there are things that did last.
I finally obtained my Real Estate Notary certification after repeated failures and interruptions. It's not like I passed on the first try. Even though I gave up a few times, I was eventually able to make it happen. Even though I am supposed to be easily excited and easily bored why did this last? Looking back, I think the fact that necessity and interest overlapped was a big factor.
I am currently borrowing books from the library to read, but because my reading speed is slow, most of my free time is taken up by reading. As a result, I am in a situation where I cannot start studying for certifications or other things I want to do.
I feel like this is putting the cart before the horse, so I am thinking of stopping reading for a while. If I can't get to the things I want to do, I will take the plunge and change my priorities. I have the feeling that once I start something, I must continue it but if I am tied down by that and other things aren't progressing, it is wiser to let it go for now.
Being easily excited and easily bored might not be a flaw. It might be a process of learning through experience what suits you and what doesn't. Losing interest is also a sign to move on to the next thing.
─────────────────────────
Have you ever had an experience where you got really into something but it didn't last? It might not be a matter of willpower, but a sign that it wasn't a good fit. When you lose interest, move on. That, too, is an important experience for getting to know yourself.
