Lessons Learned on a Morning When I Couldn't Do My Morning Routine

Sometimes, morning routines just don't go as planned, do they?

Even when you're trying your best to stick to a morning routine,
your child wakes up and things don't go according to schedule.

For those who have had that experience,
today I'd like to write about a morning from a few days ago.

A morning when I was supposed to have my morning routine

A few days ago, I woke up at 5:00 AM.
I thought that for the first time in a while, I would be able to have some morning time to myself.

I planned to work on client projects
while drinking coffee in the quiet.

"Alright, it looks like I'll get a lot done today."

It was just when I thought that and sat down at my desk.

I heard a small voice from the bedroom.

"Mommy, good morning."

My daughter had woken up.

Even though I woke up early for nothing

To be honest, I thought for just a second,

"Even though I woke up early for nothing."

The morning routine where I planned to get work done
had pretty much fallen apart at that point.

My daughter was wide awake,
and she said, "Let's play with Legos."

In the end, instead of sitting at my desk,
I ended up sitting on the floor and building Legos with my daughter.

A morning absorbed in Legos

While we were building Legos,
my daughter said,

"This is so fun!"

As I looked at that face,
the feeling I had just moments ago that "my plans were ruined"
gradually faded away.

It suddenly occurred to me.

Lego is
a game you can't play unless you have time.

Weekday evenings are hectic,
and there is rarely time to play at a leisurely pace.

So that morning,
might have actually been quite a precious time.

What does a successful morning routine mean?

When people talk about a morning routine,

・Got work done
・Managed to study
・Finished what needed to be done

That is the kind of image it has.

But that morning,
I couldn't do any of those things.

Even so,

the time I spent laughing and building Lego with my daughter,
I thought it was not a bad morning.

A morning that isn't bad, even if not everything goes as planned

I couldn't do what I had planned.

But my daughter
said, "That was fun."

If that's the case,
perhaps that morning's routine was a success after all.

A morning routine,
isn't just about getting work done,

I thought that this kind of time
might also be important.

Even if not everything goes as planned,
I realized that there are mornings that aren't bad.
