On Muffin Tins and Sweet Potato Failures
I make a bento box every day.
Every single day. I think that's impressive. It's a little embarrassing to praise myself, but since I do it every day, I think it is impressive.
Today's bento was made using a muffin tin.
A muffin tin is originally a tool for baking fluffy bread or cakes, but I use it to make side dishes for my bento. If you put different ingredients into each of the six round holes and shove it into the oven, you can make multiple side dishes at once. When I discovered this, I was a little excited. On a busy morning, it gets everything done at once. It's just that, but it feels quite good.
Today's ingredients were bacon lined with whitebait, cherry tomatoes, and poured-in egg (three of them), and a combination of green peppers and tuna (three of them). The egg and tomato ones puffed up on the surface when baked, giving them a rather cute appearance. As for the green peppers, there wasn't much change. I think green peppers are a vegetable that doesn't undergo very dramatic changes.
Another side dish was beef skewers wrapped with shiso leaves. The sight of the beef, rolled up and lined up on long, thin bamboo skewers, feels quite authentic. When baked, they shrank a bit and turned dark, but they tasted fine. With just salt and pepper, you can usually make things work out.
And then, I made a sweet potato dessert.
This tasted bad.
I stared for a while at the photo of something gooey and sweet-potato-like inside a glass container. The color was a yellowish-green, and it wasn't very appetizing. When I tried eating it, the taste wasn't very good either. I'm not sure what I did wrong. Sweet potatoes should be sweet and delicious, but sometimes they don't turn out that way. I think that's just how cooking is.
The bento box is a wooden oval shape, and the side dishes fit in nicely. When two round side dishes from the muffin tin are lined up, they look a bit like little suns, which wasn't bad. I decided to forget about the dessert and closed the lid.
Well, I managed to make a decent bento today, too. I think that's what it's all about.
