6 "What is an Invention Designer?"
I am Yuji Imai, an invention designer who makes the impossible possible!
"To begin with, what is an invention designer!?"
I can almost hear you asking that, so
let me explain!
What is an invention designer?
"A designer who specializes in inventions"
"Inventor" x "Product Designer"
is what it is!
Yes, like "Swordsman" x "Mage" = "Magic Swordsman"!
!
But in reality, the characteristics aren't that far apart, so
"Offensive magic" x "Healing magic" where you can "use both"!
It's something like that (lol)

I used to admire things like that when I was a child.
I've gotten off track, so let me get back to it.
Simply put,
"Invention" means creating a technology that didn't exist before and giving it form for the first time.
"Design" means making things beautiful and easy to use.
In my view, inventions have design elements, and
designs (of products) have inventive elements.
"An invention designer is"
a profession that specializes in the area where both overlap,
so you can think of it that way.

"In that case, wouldn't your scope of work expand if you did both, instead of just the overlap?"
Some people might think that.
I intentionally choose to focus on the "overlap."
The invention field can be handled by other inventors, and
the design field can be handled by other designers.
If I were to say Ido both,
I would be competing with
inventors and designers (especially product designers).
However, if I only do theoverlapping part,
there are limited people who excel at this,
and I can work in cooperation with both invention-type and design-type people.
In collaboration with invention-type people, I can provide designs that maximize their functionality.
In collaboration with design-type people, I can propose fundamentally new functions.
That is how it works.

And, from the time I started the business, I thought that if I specialized only in this area,
by narrowing my work down to the field I am best at, I could develop those skills more quickly,
and as a result, I would be able to make my customers even happier.
That is what I thought.
When you really want to eat delicious XX, it is the same as saying that
a restaurant that serves everythingis less likely to provide delicious XX than
a "specialty shop for XX"is.
(Sushi restaurant? Yakiniku restaurant? Eel restaurant? Ice cream shop, etc.)
Conclusion 1
"An Invention Designer is a designer who specializes in the field where 'inventions' and 'product design' overlap!"
I also work in partnership with people in the invention field and the design field!
Conclusion 2
Calling Yuji Imai an inventor is more than half correct, but I would be very happy if you called me an Invention Designer (laughs)
