The Real Battle Begins After Turning Pro

You win through a grueling entrance exam, survive a year of training, overcome the competition there, and only then can you finally become a professional.
Even athletes who have walked that long path still hit a wall.

Some athletes find success.
Others struggle with their performance and are forced to retire.

I have witnessed that reality right in front of me many times.

Naoya Hano, the athlete I am currently supporting, has been with me since he first aimed to become a boat racer.

Back then, there was a phrase we often said to each other.

"Let's pull off an upset."

At that time, he was still a nobody.
But his eyes were serious.
Because I saw that look in his eyes, I was able to be serious too.

After his debut, he grew rapidly and has now become an athlete everyone recognizes.
From the outside, it might look like smooth sailing.
But I know.
I know that the times when things didn't go well were much longer.
I know there were many nights when things didn't go as planned, when it was painful, and yet he never gave up.

Every time that happened, we talked and kept doing the best we could at that moment.
That is all.
That is what has led to where he is now.

I have sent off over 120 students, and not a single one of them cut corners.
Truly, not one.

Everyone was so serious it was almost clumsy.
That is why I still cannot forget the athletes who retired.
My heart aches when I think about how hard they worked.

That is why I want the athletes I support now to succeed even more.
That feeling grows stronger every year.

To those aiming to become boat racers now.

You cannot understand the true excitement of this world until you become a professional.
So first, I want you to do what is right in front of you correctly.
If you do it correctly, you will definitely grow.
I am always surprised by the speed of that growth myself.

Watching them grow is purely enjoyable.
No, rather than enjoyable, it makes me happy.

The way they aim to be racers and become racers.
The way they continue to aim for even greater heights after becoming racers.
When they reach the place they were hoping for, I want to be right there beside them to share in that joy.
