Aren't you a little tired of being a “good person”?
I think we can talk about reselling a bit more casually.
It’s been a while since reselling became a hot topic on social media and in the news.
Starting with masks, then sneakers, and game consoles.
Recently, there seems to have been a similar uproar over McDonald's
“Chiikawa Happy Meals”
as well.
Lining up from the morning, buying several sets,
and selling them online for double the price.
There are people who say, “I can't forgive this,”
and there are people who say, “Well, it's just business,”
and I think both are probably being honest.
The fact that edible food was thrown away is,
for someone like me who hates waste,
so incredibly wasteful that
it honestly makes me recoil.
But honestly speaking, regarding reselling,
I couldn't get that angry about it.
It’s just that I suddenly wanted to pause and ask,
“Is reselling really something we should condemn as evil?”
Oh, by the way, in our house too,
my wife bought four of them at the morning McDonald's for our kids.
I wonder where the line for reselling is drawn.
For example, I think many people have sold
unwanted items on Yahoo Auctions or Mercari.
If you call that a type of reselling, then it is,
and even 'sedori' (retail arbitrage) is just 'buying and selling.'
There is also inventory risk involved.
But who is it that draws the line between
“this is unethical” and “that is okay”?
It seems like there are clear rules, but there probably aren't.
Things I wanted in the past can sometimes be found on Yahoo Auctions or Mercari
for cheaper than I expected.
Those kinds of things aren't spoken of as evil, are they?
Whatever the loud voices
dislike becomes “evil,”
and because everyone else doesn't want to be attacked,
they nod and say, “That's right.”
Perhaps the atmosphere of good and evil is being created
by that accumulation.
I'm not saying that's wrong, necessarily.
I just wanted to blow a different wind for a moment.
“Looking like a good person” sometimes becomes exhausting.
When I look at social media,
“righteousness” is accelerating more and more.
The moment a reason to blame someone is found,
words become sharp.
Of course,
the sadness of those who couldn't buy it is real,
and they went because their children begged them to,
but they couldn't get it.
Hearing stories like that moves my heart, too.
This is a story from last year, but
I also lost the battle for the Shinako water bottle.
When I headed to Toys 'R' Us one hour before opening on the release day,
there was already an announcement that it was sold out.
It seems the people who were lined up in a position to buy it
had been waiting since 3:00 AM.
But you know, within that anger,
there is a sense of relief that says, “I am on the right side,”
which is something that,
personally, I am a little uncomfortable with.
“Are you a righteous person?”
“If you aren't, is it okay to throw stones?”
I sometimes feel an atmosphere that is checking for that.
Though, I'm not really one to talk.
When I see our company's original products,
which we make for our online shop,
being dropshipped without stock,
I feel a little bothered.
It doesn't affect sales,
but when the product page is strangely sloppy,
I feel sad, thinking,
“Is that how our products are treated?”
But maybe that's not because
“it's being resold,”
but because I felt
“there's no love in it.”
Morality and justice are a little precarious.
I really understand the feeling of
“wanting to be a good person.”
I basically act that way too.
But sometimes, that hurts someone,
or makes me suffer myself.
Behind the words “this is how it should be,”
I feel like there's a place
where no one's voice can reach.
I'm not saying all reselling is good.
But I also think the world isn't simple enough
to label everything as evil.
Humans are contradictory,
and I feel like if we can notice those contradictions,
we can be a little kinder.
In this convenient world,
instead of only looking at the sins among the pros and cons,
I want to look at the good sides sometimes too.
That's what I think.
And so, I continue to live on, feeling bothered.
While writing that, I will continue to
feel a little bothered every time I see
our products being dropshipped.
But I also feel it's wrong to just shout “it's evil”
simply because someone made a little profit.
Morality isn't universal.
Justice is sometimes very personal.
So, what should we do in the end?
……Who knows?
I just thought, when it was being
sensationalized on a talk show,
that it wouldn't hurt to have a few more conversations
that don't just end with “that guy is bad.”
That's all.
P.S.
Don't you ever think you've gotten old
when you start talking back to the TV?
