I received a consultation from a team manager who has led a team for many years.
They have had a long career as a manager and have always supported their team while staying close to the staff's feelings.
However, one day, two staff members suddenly said they were quitting, and their frustrations erupted one after another.
Having placed trust in them, the manager was filled with surprise and confusion.
Cases like this tend to happen not only in workplace hierarchies but also between parents and children, or spouses.
Thinking you understood the other person's feelings, only to find it was a one-way street and didn't get through...
So, this time, I would like to talk about the innate differences in 'ways of thinking' (thought processes).
Life perspectives and priorities of what is valued
Due to differences in personality from the other person, clear instructions or thoughts may not be conveyed.
Even when explaining in the same way, a large gap in understanding is created.
In ISD Personality Psychology, it is believed that differences in life perspectives and priorities of what is valued can be broadly divided into three groups.
People in the MOON group
The principle-oriented type who wants to know why something is necessary. The type who wants things explained carefully from 1 to 10.
People in the EARTH group
The realist type who focuses on ability, fulfillment, and results. They value time and timing. The type who wants you to speak efficiently, starting with the conclusion.
People in the SUN group
The sensibility-oriented type who values possibilities and desires. The type who wants you to expand on images with a bit of exaggeration and liven up the conversation.
Communication styles by personality type
If you explain things carefully from 1 to 10 to someone in the EARTH group who wants you to explain efficiently starting with the conclusion, they might get irritated, wondering what the important point is after all.
Conversely, if you explain too briefly to someone in the MOON group who wants you to explain carefully from 1 to 10, they might think you are unkind and you could lose their trust.
Each has a different communication style.
Isn't knowing these differences in values what is necessary for building a team where people care for each other and support one another?
It is said that we are in an era where we must learn communication.
This is a lifelong skill that can be applied to relationships and work styles in the workplace, between parents and children, or with partners.
