I gave a lecture on science writing at Hokkaido University's CoSTEP!

On Saturday, July 2nd, our Re-think Editorial Office, consisting of Yukie-san and myself, gave a lecture on science writing at Hokkaido University's CoSTEP. This was the implementation of the "Basics of Science Writing" that I had announced in my note at the end of April.

At 6:22 AM, I boarded the Okhotsk No. 2 train from Bihoro Station bound for Sapporo, and after five hours of being rocked by the train, I arrived at Sapporo Station. I felt a thrill seeing the big city after such a long time—the towering buildings, the underground malls winding through the concrete, and the crowds of people passing by. It was a moment where I realized that even though I had lived in Tokyo just a few years ago, I have now completely become accustomed to life in Bihoro.

As I walked around looking here and there, I found something good!

"Pasco Yume Pan Kobo"

It seems it opened in Sapporo Apia on June 17th! I hope they open a store in eastern Hokkaido next!

Seeing the word "Pasco," which I never see in eastern Hokkaido, brought back memories of the company that took such good care of me during my time at Leave a Nest. I felt nostalgic, wondering how everyone at Pasco was doing, and ended up buying a ton of bread. Now, I was fully prepared for the battle at Hokkaido University.

I took the Namboku subway line, got off at Kita 18-jo, and after walking for a while, I arrived at Hokkaido University.

"Alright, I'll take a commemorative photo in front of the Hokkaido University sign, and then eat my bread on a stylish bench while preparing for the afternoon lecture."

I thought to myself as I walked along. I kept walking further, thinking, "There's no sign here." I walked even further, thinking, "Well, I'll just give up on the sign and eat my bread on a bench." And then, for some reason, I wandered into a dense forest.

Does Hokkaido University start from here?
The only sign I found that looked like it belonged to Hokkaido University. I guess entering from Kita 18-jo doesn't lead to the main gate.
And before I knew it, I was in an untouched forest. Is this the right place?
Yes, I arrived at my destination!

Before I knew it, it was time for the lecture. The content of today's lecture was something like this.

<Basics of Science Writing>
Science writing is one of the fundamental skills for communicating science and technology in an easy-to-understand way to non-experts. In this class, I will cover the history of science writing and key points for writing, such as "clarifying your audience" and "conveying information accurately." I will also introduce the specific process of creating news from primary sources, using the "science news for junior and senior high school students" that I have been working on as an example.

The content was created in consultation with the CoSTEP professors, based on the experiences of Yukie-san and myself at Leave a Nest and our subsequent freelance work. I was the speaker. I gave the talk while sweating through the white dress shirt I hadn't worn in a long time. I hope it was of some help to the students.

After the lecture, I had a meeting for the "Intensive Seminar B" to be held in October, bought some souvenirs in front of Sapporo Station, and made a quick return trip. And so, I was rocked by the train again on my way back to Bihoro.

Thank you to everyone at CoSTEP and all the students for giving the Re-think Editorial Office such a valuable opportunity! I look forward to working with you again.

By the way, on this day, the main event (perhaps this was the real main event) was Tsumugi's sports day. It seems she did her best in the footrace, the obstacle course, and the dance. She is really growing up.

Tsumugi looking great in her bunny hat
Taking a classmate's hand to escort her
Just before the race, Tsumugi shows a calm expression while another child cries loudly behind her
The red tunnel obstacle is no match for her
Even hurdles can't stop Tsumugi's sprint
And then, the finish line. She has grown so much since last year when she was crying her eyes out.
She did her best at sports day!

Thank you for reading my note. I share updates almost every day about our farming, parenting, and recommended spots as a family of three people and one pet who newly started farming in Bihoro Town, Okhotsk, Hokkaido, after moving from Tokyo. If you like it, please 'like' and 'follow'!
