I finished my sales calls and returned to the office. I went back to my desk and immediately opened my laptop to write my daily report. I heard a voice from behind me and turned around.
Sorry, my computer is acting buggy. Could you take a look?
Yes, of course.
I stood up and moved to their desk. I looked at the state of the computer and immediately grasped the situation.
Try updating this. That should fix it.

I bowed to them and returned to my desk. I continued writing my daily report. I recorded the unit price and projected profit margin of the project I had secured today. Once again, I was called from behind.
Hey, it didn't fix it.
Oh, really? Let me take another look.
It's fine. Actually, I'm relieved to know there's something you can't do.

They smiled at me and walked away. That smile had a softness that no one else in the company had ever shown me.
A fake smile. Seeing that person's smile just now, I realized that the smiles I had been shown until now were just that. The warmth seeping from their face was different. I don't want to touch that artificial coldness ever again.
I continued writing my daily report. What was the unit price of the project again? 500,000 yen. No, maybe it was 600,000 yen. Which one should I write so that my boss will smile at me like that person did?
I must not get this number wrong. But I no longer know if I am trying to act, or if I am truly afraid of failure.
