The True Meaning of "Articulating Your Strengths" Learned Through Making Curry
I make curry every month.
Since my wife also works, I freeze it for when she comes home at night and thinks,
"I don't want to cook dinner today..."
I've been making this curry for over 10 years now.
I don't mean to brag, but it's quite delicious.
Yes, it's really delicious (laughs).
It took a lot of trial and error to get to this point.
To add richness,
I've tried many things, including:
• Peanuts
• Cashews
• Sake lees
• Oyster sauce
• Instant coffee
• Kimchi
• Soy sauce
...and so on. I really tried a lot of things.
Through that trial and error, I am now able to make a consistently delicious curry.
But why did it become this delicious?
The reason is simple: I have a "recipe."
I cook according to the recipe.
I reflect after cooking.
I think about what to do next.
Wait a minute...
This is what you call PDCA, isn't it?
Exactly.
PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Action) is incredibly easy to cycle through when cooking.
Because,
There is an "articulated standard" called a recipe.
The causes of success and failure are easy to understand.
It is easy to make adjustments.
That is why.
That's why when it comes to cooking, if you keep making the same thing, you will steadily improve.
However.
Even though this PDCA cycle is super famous as a business term, there are actually very few companies that are properly running it.
Why is that?
The reason is simple: it is because the foundation of PDCA,
"articulation" and "quantification",
has not been achieved.
For example,
your company's strengths
the value provided to customers
the reason you are chosen
There are truly many companies that operate while these remain vague.
But, at the point where they are not articulated,
strengths are not consciously recognized
because they are not recognized, you don't know if you are utilizing them
because you don't know, you cannot improve
This is the state you end up in.
In other words, the PDCA cycle doesn't turn.
Conversely, when your strengths are articulated,
"The response was good this time"
"This part didn't resonate"
"This value was communicated"
become visible through customer reactions.
Then, you can make improvements.
Moreover, good reactions build confidence, which in turn further refines your strengths.
What accumulates in that way eventually becomes
"a uniqueness that no one can imitate."
Perhaps strengths begin to grow the moment they are "articulated in a form that can be improved."
