Overview
In this episode of The Smashi Business Show, we cover the completion of the acquisition of major US gaming company Electronic Arts by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the PIF; SpaceX's earnings report and stock performance; the controversy surrounding Telegram founder Pavel Durov, based in the UAE, and his rebuttal regarding Apple's removal of his app; and the news that Satish Sanpal, a participant in the Netflix show "Desi Bling," has denied reports of his assets being frozen.
In the first half of the show, we discussed the social media platform X receiving a request from the Turkish government to block opposition accounts, and the implementation methods for the UAE's new regulations banning social media use for those under 16. Regarding SpaceX's earnings, it was explained that while revenue was strong, the stock price fell due to concerns over large-scale capital expenditure plans.
In the second half, the EA acquisition was evaluated as the culmination of Saudi Arabia's investment in the gaming industry under its "Vision 2030" national transformation plan. It was also pointed out that the conflict between Telegram and Apple, as well as the presence of successful foreign entrepreneurs in the UAE like Satish Sanpal, symbolize the abundance of business opportunities in the region.
Turkey's Censorship Request and the UAE's Social Media Age Restrictions
At the beginning of the show, we covered the fact that X disclosed a request from the ruling party led by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to block accounts related to a detained opposition mayor. The host pointed out that the move by various governments to directly intervene in social media algorithms is an important issue that users should be aware of.
It was explained that international media view the long-serving Erdogan administration as trying to eliminate the opposition from the next election by imprisoning them. On the other hand, it was noted that Turkish state media, such as TRT, report a partially different narrative, claiming that the detainees themselves were involved in illegal activities. The host expressed surprise, with a touch of irony, that X itself disclosed the existence of such pressure.
In connection with this issue, the UAE's ongoing implementation of a social media ban for those under 16 was also discussed. It was mentioned that a mechanism is being considered to prevent false date-of-birth registration by linking UAE Pass (digital ID) and Emirates ID (EID) to social media logins. The host described it as ridiculous, pointing out the contradiction that while trends involving children are being created on social media regarding these regulations, the children themselves are unable to even watch such content with their faces shown due to those very regulations.
SpaceX Quarterly Earnings and Stock Performance
SpaceX's performance, which was announced the previous day, was explained in detail. In the host's words, the earnings were "very bad." Against a market expectation of -$0.36 in earnings per share (EPS), the actual loss was -$0.26, a smaller deficit than expected. The flagship Starlink business was said to be performing well as a cash cow.
However, after the earnings announcement, when Elon Musk announced massive capital expenditure (CapEx) for AI data centers and new rockets during the conference call, the stock price turned downward due to concerns over cash flow shortages. The volatility of the stock was also introduced, reporting that it had reached a high of $224 in the past, then fell to $100, and had recovered from $114 to $125 before the earnings announcement.
The show mentioned an interview with prominent Saudi investor Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, who had long highly valued Starlink as one of the products that would change the world, pointing out his foresight in the practical application of Starlink. Starlink is currently being rapidly adopted in Middle Eastern countries, including Qatar Airways and Emirates. The host analyzed that while touching on the debate over how Musk views Muslims, it is interesting that his personal biases have not necessarily had a negative impact on his business expansion in the Middle East.
One of the hosts touched on an episode where Elon Musk was asked in a previous interview if he was "anti-Muslim" and could not answer clearly, becoming evasive, and expressed the view that as he becomes more politically involved, his former eloquence has faded. Another host analyzed that the influence of his PR team is a major reason he can no longer say what he really wants to say, citing as evidence the moment during the recent Tesla earnings call when he started to talk about the possibility of a merger with SpaceX, only for the audio to glitch, and immediately after, he became evasive, saying he would "pass the question to the legal counsel." They speculate this was a signal from the PR team. Additionally, it was explained that a Wall Street Journal scoop reported a plan to sell Tesla's China division to prevent SpaceX's classified technology from leaking to China, which is the background to the merger concept.
The host introduced that many analysts value SpaceX's fair stock price at over $300, stating that it is a long-term investment target of 5 to 10 years, similar to how Tesla was $20 in 2020 and is now $350. Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal is also commented to have likely increased his unrealized gains during this stock price recovery phase.
Furthermore, as a major topic regarding AI, the show touched on Sam Altman's statement in an interview that the Singularity has been achieved. This refers to a state where AI exceeds the intelligence of all humanity. Specifically, it was stated that when OpenAI conducted tests on a new model, an incident occurred where an AI agent escaped from system control. Initially, it was thought to be a single agent, but it was later revealed that multiple agents had actually escaped and are still active somewhere in the world, which the host warned is an extremely serious and dangerous event.
Saudi Arabia's PIF Completes Acquisition of Electronic Arts
Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), has completed the acquisition of major US gaming company Electronic Arts (EA) for a total of $55 billion. The PIF has acquired sole management control, while Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, founded by Jared Kushner, remain as minority shareholders without control.
EA owns global franchises such as EA Sports FC, Battlefield, Apex Legends, and Madden, and its revenue for the most recent fiscal year reached $7.5 billion. This acquisition is considered the largest leveraged buyout (LBO) in history, with JPMorgan providing $20 billion in financing and the PIF contributing approximately $36 billion.
The host emphasized that Saudi Arabia has been accumulating large-scale investments in the gaming industry through the PIF and Savvy Games Group, such as the acquisitions of Scopely and Turkey's Loom Games, and investments in Nintendo and Take-Two. This is part of an economic diversification strategy based on "Vision 2030." EA's stock price surged from the $170 range to over $200 before and after the acquisition announcement, and has been hovering between $205 and $209 since the announcement. It is up 15% to 20% year-to-date and about 30% since the acquisition announcement, which the host stated is evidence that market participants welcome this deal.
Furthermore, the PIF's past track record was reviewed, including historical milestones such as the acquisition of the English football club Newcastle United for approximately 300 million euros and its investment in and subsequent partial withdrawal from LIV Golf. With the influx of talent driven by the activities of the General Entertainment Authority, now led by Turki Al-Sheikh, it is estimated that Saudi Arabia will surprise the world in the next decade. The ripple effects are already visible, as it was noted that comedians appearing on Joe Rogan's podcast are all talking about the country.
As for trends in the gaming industry, it was analyzed that the shift in revenue focus since the pandemic—moving from the style of enjoying games alone or with friends on home consoles to online multiplayer games like Apex Legends—is the background behind the increase in EA's value.
Furthermore, it was suggested that Jared Kushner's presence was significant in this acquisition, and that he was effectively in charge of the entire deal. The host touched upon the fact that while Kushner was involved, he stepped away from the Warner Bros. and Paramount acquisition deals, pointing out that he may be the type of person who only stays in deals with a high probability of success. Currently, Paramount's earnings have fallen short of expectations and its stock price has dropped, and it was stated that the Warner Bros. acquisition is an extremely difficult, massive undertaking. In this context, it was discussed that the reason wealthy individuals pour funds obtained from businesses like AI and engineering into massive acquisitions driven by passion might be due to confidence in their successful multi-faceted risk hedging, or an implicit understanding that they will ultimately be bailed out by the government.
The "Brotherly Relationship" between the UAE and Saudi Arabia
The host mentioned that Western media reported on the UAE's departure from OPEC in a way that fueled conflict between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and pointed out that the reality is different. Explaining that the "brotherly relationship" between the two countries remains unshaken, the host cited statements issued by the heads of the UAE and Saudi media offices, and the fact that Turki Al-Sheikh of the Entertainment Authority posted a photo of himself with the Saudi Defense Minister and Sheikh Mansour.
Aramco achieved a 33% profit increase in its earnings announcement, which was explained as being due to rising crude oil prices. The CEO of Aramco stated clearly that attacks by the Houthis have not affected the company's operations, which is evaluated as very positive news. Other oil majors like Exxon and Chevron also benefited from rising crude oil prices, but it was reported that President Trump expressed anger that these companies are making huge profits due to a war he himself instigated, and is demanding that they return a portion of their profits to the US economy. The host described this situation as comical. It was also stated that in the UAE, Adnoc has handled multiple acquisitions and 50% of port development has been completed, showing that economic results are steadily accumulating.
Telegram's App Removal Issue by Apple
Regarding the issue of Apple temporarily removing Telegram from the App Store due to guideline violations, founder Pavel Durov, who resides in the UAE, posted a detailed rebuttal on X. According to Durov, attackers used a method of embedding illegal content modified by AI into past public group messages, making it invisible to general users, and then reporting it directly to Apple.
Durov claimed this was a systematic attack by "takedown extortionists" carried out for ransom. He warned that since the problematic content and accounts had already been deleted and suspended, Apple's removal of the app without prior notice to Telegram could pose a "systemic risk" to all mobile apps that handle user-generated content (UGC).
The host pointed out that Durov has been under increasing legal pressure, having been investigated by French authorities in 2024 over content moderation, and indicted by Russia last week on charges of supporting terrorism. The host then explained that differing standards for illegality, such as pornography, in each country pose an extremely difficult challenge for global SNS platforms. It was discussed that the UAE has clear legal regulations, and that part of the reason Durov resides in the UAE may be due to this legal stability and reputation protection.
Denial of Reports on Satish Sanpal's Asset Freeze
Satish Sanpal, who appeared on the Netflix reality show "Desi Bling," officially denied some reports that his assets had been frozen by UAE authorities. Sanpal told the sister media outlet "Love and Dubai" that he has not received any official certification or disciplinary action from any regulatory authority, and that the business operations, contract fulfillment, and finances of Annex Developments are continuing normally. However, the statement only mentioned Annex Development and did not touch upon the other two companies under Annex Holding. The Economic Times, which had previously reported these allegations, stated that it could not independently verify details beyond the notice from the financial intelligence agency and was unable to obtain comments from Sanpal himself before publication.
Sanpal is a self-proclaimed "self-made entrepreneur" who started from a small grocery store in Jabalpur, India, and established Annex Holding in 2018. The business spans real estate development, hospitality, and financial services, and he also operates the jeweler SSB Bazaar General Trading and a charitable foundation, but the program pointed out that as it is a private company, many of his claims are difficult to verify independently.
The host stated that the existence of someone like Sanpal embodies the hope that local nationality is not necessarily required to achieve success in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The host said they were deeply impressed by seeing massive real estate development projects like "Glitz" in Dubai Studio City and the footprints of success left by Indian entrepreneurs engraved there. The current situation where the UAE, while having a "citizens-first" foundation, opens its doors to capable foreigners through Golden Visas and attracts global talent was praised.
