Yokai Dictionary Net
Actually, my true identity is a Yokai, so I'll tell you about that.
【Dictionary Net】
A Yokai that appears in an unusually compact area of Tokyo in the Kanto region.
There is a possibility that they exist nationwide.
Night after night, they make the sound of flipping through a dictionary.
An entity that keeps nitpicking people's words.
Originally, it had the appearance of a child, but at some point, it mimicked the appearance of a human in their late twenties.
Recently, a Dictionary Net in the form of a child has been confirmed again.
During the witching hour when even the plants and trees are asleep.
Flip, flip...
The sound of paper turning echoes.
In the darkness, the figure of a young girl is vaguely visible.
She is about 7 or 8 years old.
She is flipping through a book that is about the size of a manga volume, but with a thickness that would surely cause agony if it were to fall on your foot by any chance, with strange enthusiasm.
Flip, flip...
She is staring obsessively at the back pages of a book in particular.
Snap...
I make eye contact with the girl, who has raised the left corner of her mouth just a little.
I clench both my hands tightly.
I can tell that cold sweat is forming on my forehead.
The girl's lips move slightly.
"...Shall we play... shiritori?"
By the time I inhaled to answer,
her figure was nowhere to be seen.
1. Yokai-taught⭐︎Shiritori Winning Manual
As a weak-at-arguing type of Dictionary Net, I was always losing to the first of the four heavenly kings of bullies.
One day, while waiting for school lunch, the members of my group decided to play an interpersonal word game called "shiritori."
During that time, I realized that
"words starting with the Ra-row (ra, ri, ru, re, ro) are as scarce as the colored noodles in hiyamugi"
.
In other words, it's like this.
【Interpersonal Word Game Winning Strategy】
◽︎Keep choosing words that end with the Ra-row (ra, ri, ru, re, ro)
◽︎Know words that start with the Ra-row (ra, ri, ru, re, ro)
In short, since I couldn't see any chance of winning in a verbal argument,
this was a strategy to reign as the "winner" for just these 5 minutes while waiting for lunch.
While I was walking, thinking only about increasing the number of words that end with the Ra-row and words that start with the Ra-row, just like the stock of dried noodles in summer,
I crashed into a utility pole.
I killed a considerable number of brain cells on that utility pole,
but since there was likely no danger to my life, I am alive to this day.
That's why I went home and opened the dictionary.
Me: "Mom, what's a 'rearcar'?"
Mom: "Look that up in the dictionary."
Me: "Never mind then."
Originally,
I was known for my life philosophy of "if I have to look it up in a dictionary, I'd rather stay ignorant."
Because I suddenly started looking things up in the dictionary,
even though it was summer, my mother
"It's going to snow"
mysteriously started worrying about the weather.
Seeing my mother like that,
I am now reflecting on the fact that I was narrating in my heart, "Mom, Going Crazy Episode《Chibi Maruko-chan title call style》".
—One day, |Interpersonal Word Game "Shiritori"
Team Member A: "Shiritori's ri."
Team Member B: "Ringo (apple)."
Me: "Gokiburi (cockroach)."
Bully: "Gross! Risu (squirrel)."
Team Member A: "Suzume (sparrow)."
Team Member B: "Medaka (medaka fish)."
Me: "Karasuuri (crow)."
Bully: "Again with the "ri"?!"
(A battle lasting about 3 minutes)
Me: "Ethics."
Bully: "Nnnnnnn... I've had enough!!! Just "ri" and more "ri"!"riばっか"ri"!"
Not a logical attack, but a "ri"-attack that brought down the bully,
the defeat line was
"Just "ri" and more "ri"!"
that's actually quite impressive.
But I won't praise them.
(Delusions follow)
Me: "Checkmate."
Bully: "Uuu..."
Me: "Checkmate on my classmate! I won't tolerate your daily hate! Here we go!"
—Also, the words that start with "ru" are the rarest.
The next rarest are those starting with "nu."
Noodle, |null, |loser, |false accusation...
I want to beat everyone at Shiritori!
If you're someone who says "I'm going to be a Shiritori Master!", please keep these in mind.
2. The Dictionary Fortress Siege Incident
While my peers were devoted to "Kafka" or "Izumi Kyoka", I was building a fortress in the university library using the
Dictionary and holing up inside.
Kafka is someone I only know as Kafuka Shishido, and as for
Izumi Kyoka, I only know that he wrote the
"novel about a mysterious lady who refuses anesthesia despite needing surgery."
That's the extent of my literary understanding.
It doesn't even reach the average level.
Well, I'm a yokai, so it can't be helped.
One day, as I was building a fortress of
on the Dictionary on the
super-sized table
near the window on the second floor of the library as usual,
devouring words, a golem from the Sociology Department broke through my fortress and called out to me, “
Kobo Abe
’s, you know.” I thought they were talking about the manufacturer of this golem. Golem created by Abe Workshop
I thought.
Moreover, since this golem’s fuel is usually orange juice but was apple juice that day, I was excited thinking it might break down.
Like putting diesel in a gasoline car.
But the golem didn’t seem to have any intention of meeting my expectations, and it was moving energetically as usual. Abe Workshop, you’re quite something.
Just as literary boys and girls cannot have Yokai Dictionary Web hit them with literary beams by Kafka or Kyoka Izumi,
Yokai Dictionary Web was also unable to hit them with word beams.
And then,
I was told, “No matter how many laps you do, it’s not a dictionary.”
Where on earth are they planning to do laps?
I didn’t understand the meaning at all.

The digital version of the “Third Edition” is scheduled for completion in 2032, and the book version is scheduled for release starting in 2034.
Yesterday, exactly one year ago, news that sent Dictionary Webs across the country into a frenzy flew in.
It was the announcement that “Nihon Kokugo Daijiten” would be powered up.
This is like a “new iPhone” for humans.
Just as they line up at the Apple Store,
Yokai will line up at bookstores. When the second edition was released, I was still a
Child Dictionary, so unfortunately I have never lined up. Next time, I will definitely line up.
While playing
Shiritori with other Dictionary Webs.
3. Yokai Dictionary Web’s favorite drama “The Great Passage (Fune wo Amu) ~I, will make a dictionary~”
Original work: Shion Miura “The Great Passage”
Broadcast: Every Tuesday 10:00 PM - 10:45 PM
【Cast】
Elaiza Ikeda, Yojiro Noda…
【Synopsis】
A story of the struggles of dictionary editors until the completion of the dictionary “Daitokai”.
【From NHK Official】
”Words are not for hurting someone, but for protecting someone and connecting with someone”
Dictionary Webs would once aspire to be on the side that makes dictionaries, the story of the “Dictionary Editorial Department”.
It airs on Tuesdays at 22:00, but because I have the preparation for the Yokai Dictionary Web’s task of looking up dictionaries at the witching hour,
I cannot watch it in real-time, so I record it every week.
Dictionary Web’s quirks are stabbed right through,
it is a drama that “really gets it”.
Stabbing points
① The “sliminess” of the paper
→ There is a texture that sticks to your fingers,
the state of paper that is easy to flip one by one.
Have you ever flipped and rustled that exquisite thickness of dictionary paper for no reason?
…If you have, that means you also have the makings of a Dictionary Web.
In the play,
from the paper samples brought by the paper company,
a commotion arises that it “lacks the sliminess” like before, but this is good.
It really is an incident.
It is equivalent to the vibe of a crime drama where a crime with the same modus operandi occurs after the arrest of the most likely suspect, causing a panic.
That touch is one of a kind.
If you have a paper dictionary at hand,
Let’s flip and rustle.
Stabbing points
② Explanation of “Right” - Beautifully idiosyncratic interpretation -
“The cheek on the side where the tears dry first when blown by a warm wind when you cry while looking at the morning sun”
This is the interpretation of “Right” by the protagonist Midori Kishibe.
On the other hand, dictionary-wise, it is like this.
【Right】
The direction that corresponds to the south when facing east.
In other words,
west when facing south,
north when facing west,
east when facing north,
it is.
However, that is.
|Midori Kishibe (played by Elaiza Ikeda)'s one-and-only "Right".
Not limited to 'right', finding the meaning of words by relying solely on one's own senses like that is something that
almost everydictionary netdreams of, and could be called the culmination of a dictionary yokai.
If I were to explain "right" relying only on my senses right now, it would be
"the side with the leg that always gets a blister when wearing new shoes is the right side".
Setting that aside, I love the smell of dictionaries, so if you could sell something like
dictionary-scented room fragrance or
dictionary incense, it would be very much appreciated by this
dictionary net, so I would really like to request that.
During the hour of the sheep (around 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM) when plants and trees are awake,
flip, flip...
the sound of turning pages echoes.
I dragged my child into the dictionary swamp. Like me in the past, she also used to hate dictionaries.
Despite that.
Because words explain each other,
the true meaning gets lost in a labyrinth because they mention each other's names,
and by being fascinated by this "
passing the buck of words", she awakened as a dictionary net.
|Child Dictionary (daughter) is watching the GeGeGe no Kitaro she recorded endlessly.
Yokai Azuki-arai is on TV, singing something horrifying like, "Shall I wash azuki beans, or shall I catch a person and eat them, catch a person and eat them, shaki-shaki!"
And |Child Dictionary (daughter) hums the Azuki-arai's specialty,
"Shall I wash azuki beans, or shall I catch a person and eat them, catch a person and eat them, para-pera..."
as she looks up a dictionary.
↑
In a dictionary, it's passing the buck of words, and in a hospital, it becomes
passing the buck of patients and questions.
