8.3. Omens of Scientific Speculation
One of the works that best embodies these omens is Arthur C. Clarke's Imperial Earth (1975). In this work, which predates the Voyager exploration, Titan already appears as a setting conscious of astronomical knowledge. Descriptions such as "lakes, rifts, and low-hanging orange clouds illuminated by the weak, chilly light of a distant sun," as well as the content described in Part 1, Chapter 4, titled "The Red Moon"—these are settings based on the scientific information available at the time. Above all, it is impressive that the story begins with a scene where, by pure chance, the protagonist hears a recording picked up by a microphone of "the sound of the wind breathing and whispering in the uninhabited land one hundred meters above" the heads of those living underground. It is fair to say that its "Earth-like" characteristics were "predicted" with an accuracy that is hard to believe, considering the era. However, crucially, starting with the assumption that the main component of the atmosphere is hydrogen and the surface temperature setting based on its greenhouse effect being too high (although the existence of methane lakes is mentioned, it is set as being limited to the polar regions), Titan, while being a "scientifically conscious" setting, seems to show the limits of imagination regarding specific constraints. The transition from symbol to condition is still underway here.
The same can be said for "hard" SF writers like Gregory Benford. If the Stars are Gods (1977), which Benford wrote with Eklund, was published in 1977 as if to coincide with the launch of Voyager 1 and 2; it is a work written on the very eve of the Voyager program, but it sets a visit to Titan in 2061 as the final destination of the protagonist's "pilgrimage," which began with the 1992 Mars life exploration. There is a description of Titan as "a giant, frozen snowball with a rocky core at its center. Between the core and the solid surface is a muddy substance mixed with dust, ice, and liquid. Due to compression heat and the heat generated when radioactive materials in the mud decay, parts of the snowball gradually warm up. The heated liquid gathers at the top through convection, the pressure increases, and it erupts outward as lava mixed with methane, ammonia, and water."
However, what this description shows is not the writer's unbridled fantasy. In the astronomical understanding of the mid-1970s, Titan was already considered a "differentiated celestial body consisting of ice and rock," and it was speculated that a liquid layer could exist inside due to radioactive decay heat. A dense methane atmosphere had been known since the 1940s, and the possibility of organic matter production through photochemical reactions was being discussed in the 1970s. In other words, Benford's Titan is not a fantasy, but a literary extension of theoretical models.
What is important here is the foundation upon which the imagination relies. In the early works, Titan was a symbol of the "cosmic other." In Vonnegut, it was a device for allegory. With Clarke and Benford, Titan becomes a virtual object deduced from the inferences of theoretical astronomy.
Yet, something decisive was still missing. Titan could not be seen. A dense orange smog covered the surface, and neither telescopes nor probes revealed the landscape beneath. Whether the surface was an ocean, mud, or an icy wasteland—even that had not been determined. There was theory. But the object had not manifested. Literature stood upon this invisibility.
It was beginning to be constrained, but it was still free. Science was providing conditions, but it was not providing a concrete landscape. In other words, pre-Voyager Titan literature, even if it was "imagination with conditions," was not "post-observation imagination."
And in 1980, the situation changed. When Voyager 1 approached the Saturnian system and performed a flyby of Titan, researchers finally hoped to see the surface. But what was projected was an even denser haze. The surface remained hidden, and only the nitrogen-dominant composition and temperature structure of the atmosphere were revealed.
At this moment, Titan became a dual existence. It was no longer a pure symbol. It became a physical celestial body with numerical values for atmospheric composition, temperature, and pressure. But at the same time, its surface remained invisible, and room for imagination remained. Voyager did not reveal Titan. It transformed Titan into a "more rigorous unknown." This "rigorous unknown" is the condition that defines subsequent Titan literature.
