Long Live Laziness! The Dream of a Fully Automated Life Realized with the Latest Gadgets
"Humans are creatures born seeking laziness"...is not a quote from some famous philosopher.
Yes, I just made that up right now. But honestly, don't you get sick of doing the same thing over and over every single day?
I am quite serious when I think, "I absolutely do not want to do things that humans don't have to do." Tasks where you can't shake the question, "Why am I doing this?" are truly painful.
What I arrived at is a utopia called "Full Life Automation." This time, I'm revealing the ridiculously comfortable automated life I practice! You'll surely think, "I want to copy this starting tomorrow!" (or perhaps, "I don't want to be this degenerate!").
Room Cleaning: Roomba, devour the dust in my home!
First, the first step to automation is, of course, cleaning. In my home, the ECOVACS DEEBOT N8+ fights dust day and night (never mind the comment about it not being a Roomba).
This little one is a slightly older model, so while it has a mopping function, the mop replacement is manual, so I gradually stopped using the mopping feature... (I'm even too lazy for that. How much of a slacker am I?)
It's been four years since I bought it. There were times to replace parts, but it's now a full-fledged member of the family.
・You can't leave things on the floor (it gets tidy automatically!)
・There is never a speck of dust on the floor
・Mental health is excellent
・It even handles trash collection
While it has these benefits, on the other hand,
・Requires regular maintenance because hair gets tangled
・Surprisingly noisy (a bit of a nuisance during remote work)
・Sometimes it runs out of energy and ends up flipped over
are also disadvantages. However, even subtracting those, the sense of happiness from "not having to clean" is immeasurable.
Recently, high-end models that pick up obstacles with robot arms have appeared, but...
I really want one. But the cat won't be able to ride on it (lol).
If I win the lottery, I'd love to welcome one.
Bathroom Cleaning: I want to present a letter of appreciation to the electric mop
I used to scrub the bathroom manually, but one day I suddenly realized, "Isn't this seriously pointless?"
So I introduced an electric mop. When I finish my bath, I just hold it against the floor and zone out, and it becomes sparkling clean, so I can't let it go.
Toilet Cleaning: Believe in Haiter, and you shall be saved.
The thing that drastically reduced the frequency of toilet cleaning is Toilet Haiter.
Every time I use it, I just drip a little into the bowl, and lo and behold, it becomes harder for dirt to stick.
Well, not just for the toilet, but whenever I'm in trouble, I spray Haiter and pray.
At this point, it's a religion.
If you join the Church of Haiter, you will be saved (deadpan)..
Room Temperature Management: Putting Full Trust in SwitchBot
Room temperature management has, of course, also been automated. I use SwitchBot temperature and humidity sensors to control the air conditioner, humidifier, and dehumidifier.
Specifically,
・Turn on heating when it drops below 18°C
・Turn on cooling when it hits 25°C or higher
・Turn on dehumidification when humidity exceeds 50%
・Turn on humidification when humidity drops below 20%
These are the settings. These operations are performed through the SwitchBot temperature and humidity sensor and the hub.
The SwitchBot Hub can learn remote control signals in the home, so the appeal is that it can make existing appliances smart. With just one hub, you can operate all remote-controlled appliances in the house as long as the infrared signal reaches them.
Thanks to this, I no longer have to think about room temperature at all. This is true stress-free living.

(Setting aside the issue that the humidifier isn't working because refilling the water is a hassle)
Lighting: Alexa, turn on the lights!
Lighting control is mainly left to Alexa and the SwitchBot hub (or physical switches). It's subtly helpful that everything is completed with a single phrase: "Alexa, turn on the lights" or "Alexa, turn off the lights." Especially when I'm dozing off.

For some reason, it's in an inconspicuous place, but it's suuuuper convenient.
Also, by linking it with an illuminance sensor,
・Automatically turn on when it gets dark
・Automatically dim at 23:00
I have also set it up like this. Furthermore, it is equipped with a function that automatically turns off the lights when my smartphone leaves the house (this is a SwitchBot function, not Alexa's). With this, I can say goodbye to forgetting to turn off the lights.
Extra: When remote control isn't possible...
I use the SwitchBot physical switch.
This tip part clicks or pulls to remotely press or turn off common electrical switches.
(I didn't really understand that it could pull as well as press until I bought it, but it really can pull. It's amazing.)
This is a simple yet innovative mechanism, and since it can be used with almost any flat appliance, it's highly versatile. It sticks on quite firmly with double-sided tape, so it doesn't need much maintenance.
Motion sensors can be combined with it to do things like 'turn on the lights or air purifier when entering a room,' making it all-purpose depending on your ideas.
I really love this kind of ingenuity.
Sound: A comfortable sleep with ambient noise
I use Alexa skills to play random ambient sounds in the morning and at night. It often plays relaxing sounds like birds chirping or a crackling fire, but...
Since it's completely random, it's just part of the charm when it occasionally starts playing construction site noise.
Lock: Safe and secure with auto-lock
To prevent forgetting to lock the door, I introduced a SwitchBot automatic lock.
It's reassuring because I can check the status of the lock from my smartphone even when I'm away. Also, I have it set to lock automatically when my smartphone leaves the house, so I don't have to worry about forgetting to lock it.
...However, you need to be careful about getting locked out. If you leave the house without your phone or anything else... at worst, you might end up sleeping outside.
Curtains: A refreshing morning waking up to light
I have the curtains set to open automatically in the morning.
This little guy hangs on the curtain rail and opens and closes the curtains by pulling them.
...However, the sound when it opens is quite loud, so the downside is that it forces you to wake up.
And I have it set to close automatically 5 minutes later. I'm not a fan of sunlight... (Why did I buy this?).
Coffee: Longing for and frustration with full automation
I used to use a Siroca fully automatic coffee maker, attached a SwitchBot to it, and had it set up so that coffee would be automatically prepared as soon as I woke up in the morning.
(I think I might have streamed a mysterious video of me making coffee for members only before)
However, I realized that the cleaning process after setting the beans and brewing the coffee was more troublesome than I imagined, so I don't use it anymore.
The road to full automation still seems quite steep.
Consumable Replenishment: SmartMat Lite
I used to use a product called SmartMat Lite, which measures weight and automatically orders items when the stock placed on it runs low. I used it for water, tissues, toilet paper, and the like to prevent those 'Oh, I forgot to buy that!' moments.
But...
It seems the service will be discontinued on September 30, 2025, so I am currently looking for an alternative. A pity.
Still, aren't you buying too many SwitchBot products?
Yes. It can't be helped.
Because smart home appliances have different management apps depending on the manufacturer, if you go around thinking, 'Is this one SwitchBot, or is that one Smart Link...', you get confused. That's why it is more rational to consolidate smart home appliance manufacturers.
Besides, SwitchBot is relatively inexpensive all things considered. While the list price is high, they are often on sale during Amazon sales.
(*I might sound like a shill for SwitchBot, but I have no vested interest as there are no affiliate links in this article.)
I often learn about Amazon sale information from the blogs of Emu-san and Himajin33-go.
I have no idea how both of them manage to summarize sale information so clearly. If I wrote it, it would probably be 80% SwitchBot reviews and 0% everything else. (Where did the other 20% go?)
Future Challenges: Laundry, Taking Out the Trash, and...
Thanks to you, the automation of my daily life has progressed quite a bit, but there are still tasks that simply cannot be automated.
Laundry, taking out the trash, brushing teeth, bathing... I want to find a way to automate these tasks too! Especially with bathing, I think a fully automatic shower would be revolutionary.
They say a 'Future Human Washing Machine' will be exhibited at the Osaka Expo, but
when will I be able to use this at home?
...Could someone please call Doraemon for me?
Thank you for reading until the end! If you liked it, I'd appreciate a like/follow. May good things come your way!
