"Asso Hachiman Shrine" is a shrine dedicated to Emperor Ojin and Empress Jingu, mother and son!
Wakayama Prefecture is dotted with shrines that have unique pronunciations. In this article, we will focus on the "Asso Hachiman Shrine," which is considered particularly difficult to read, and the "Okada Hachiman Shrine," which is also located in Kainan City. Asso Hachiman Shrine is a historic shrine dedicated to Emperor Ojin and Empress Jingu, and it is said that the place name "Asso" originated from this shrine. It has gone through historical changes, such as looting by rioters from Negoro-ji Temple, and has gathered faith from military commanders and feudal lords, including the Hatakeyama clan. Within the precincts, there are several shrines, including the main hall, Hime Shrine, and Sumiyoshi Shrine, each dedicated to different deities. Regarding Okada Hachiman Shrine, unfortunately, I had to give up on visiting it this time, but I will mention its existence.

The enshrined deity is Homutawake no Mikoto (Emperor Ojin).
Empress Jingu stopped by with Emperor Ojin while returning from the Three Kingdoms of Korea.
When Empress Jingu returned home carrying Emperor Ojin (then known as Hondawake), the villagers built a temporary palace to welcome them. The Empress was moved and promised, "I will come again tomorrow (Asso)."
This is how the place name "Asso" originated.
In 1353, rioters from Negoro-ji Temple (My NOTE) broke in and stole treasures such as swords, bows, arrows, and the Lotus Sutra written by the Emperor, as well as land donation certificates from various feudal lords such as the Hosokawa and Ishido clans, and even the personal belongings of the chief priest.
Because of this, there are no records of the date of foundation, and it remains unknown.
In 1354, it became the guardian deity of the Asso Manor under Hatakeyama Owari-no-Kami.
It gathered deep faith from generations of military commanders and feudal lords.
