Nomad Guide: Meguro Ward - The 'Sanma' Trap and Handmade Love! Hacking the 'Sanma-kun' Web Reservation System to Secure Coveted Power-Equipped Seats, and Secret Hopping Routes by Activity
Meguro Ward is lined with stylish cafes and select shops. However, have you ever wandered the streets looking for power outlets and Wi-Fi, only to find every cafe packed with no seats available when you finally open your laptop to work?
In fact, Meguro Ward is a treasure trove of public libraries with excellent working environments. The facilities are filled with the warm, creative ingenuity of the staff, such as handmade acrylic partitions and extension cords sprouting from below, making them the ultimate third places for nomads.
However, there are also survival rules you should know in advance, such as the intense crowding at popular branches and the 'immersion trap' of having absolutely no power outlets.
In this article, I, the author, who has actually carried a PC around to every library in Meguro Ward for field verification, will reveal everything about the 'trends and countermeasures' for surviving PC work comfortably in Meguro Ward.
1. [Basic Rules of Meguro Ward] Anyone living, working, or studying in the 23 wards can get one! The 'Sanma' library card and the reservation machine trap
When you step into a Meguro Ward library, the first thing that warms your heart is the 'handmade feel.' No matter which library you visit, the reading seat partitions and card holders are filled with the staff's handmade touch, and some branches even provide 'eraser dust bins' that I haven't seen in any other ward.
And above all, the library card featuring the illustration of 'Sanma' (Pacific saury), the symbol of Meguro Ward, is irresistibly cute. Apparently, the author is not publicly known.
While this cute 'Sanma library card' is great, it actually has the following issuance restrictions.
Issuance Restriction: Residents, workers, or students within the 23 wards of Tokyo
Renewal Period: 3 years
With this card, any nomad worker with a connection to the 23 wards, even if not a resident of Meguro, can use the library's seat reservation system.
2. [Newbie Trap] Master the difference in 'time mechanisms' between web reservations and in-library reservation machines
Major libraries in Meguro Ward have introduced a seat reservation system. The name of the reservation machine is, believe it or not, 'Sanma-kun'!
This reservation system is extremely convenient and allows you to secure a seat in advance from the website, but there is a 'newbie trap' lurking here. In fact, the reservation mechanism (time units) is completely different between web reservations and in-library reservation machines.
For web reservations
You select and reserve from the following 'fixed 2-hour slots'.
09:00 - 11:00
11:00 - 13:00
13:00 - 15:00
15:00 - 17:00
17:00 - 19:00
For the in-facility reservation machine (Sanma-kun)
Regardless of fixed time slots, you can make a reservation for "exactly 2 hours from any time you operate the machine."
Flexible usage, such as "I arrived at 10:30, so I'll use Sanma-kun to keep a seat until 12:30," is possible on-site. Keep this difference in mind to secure your seat wisely.
3. [Must Avoid] The Trap of 'Nakameguro Station Front Library' with Zero Work Spaces
There is a mistake you must never make when trying to do PC work in Meguro Ward. That is heading to the Nakameguro Station Front Library just because it seems convenient since it's near the station.
In fact, the Nakameguro Station Front Library is a library that "does not have any reading seats for work in the first place." There isn't a single seat with space to open a PC, so please exclude it from your candidate list from the start to avoid accidentally carrying your PC there. I went there once...
4. [Combined with Entertainment] From Sky Gardens to Pools! Combination Hacks to Refresh Your Brain to the Limit Before and After Work
The greatest appeal of libraries in Meguro Ward is that wonderful "entertainment and activities" are located right next door. By visiting not just to sit at a desk and work, but as a set with taking a break, you can achieve maximum output while refreshing your brain to the limit. Here are the "ultimate sets" recommended by the author.
🟢 Ohashi Library + Meguro Sky Garden
The beautiful 400-meter circumference "Meguro Sky Garden" built on top of the Ohashi Junction of the Shuto Expressway. The Ohashi Library is located on the 9th floor of the super high-rise apartment building "Cross Air Tower" right next to it. I work at a counter seat facing a wonderful view from a high floor, and when I get tired, I take a deep breath while strolling through the Sky Garden. My standard way of spending time is to buy food at the supermarket on the lower floor and enjoy a picnic mood. There are models for architecture enthusiasts, which I also enjoyed.
🟢 Meguro Citizens Center Library + Park, Pool, and Art Museum
Located in a lush park along the Meguro River, this is a huge complex that also includes an outdoor pool, gymnasium, tennis courts, and the Meguro Museum of Art. It is a luxurious base where you can combine work in a retro space that feels like Showa nostalgia with art appreciation, strolling, and a swim in the pool.
🟢 Yakumo Central Library + Meguro Citizens Campus Park
An underground oasis nestled beneath the Meguro Citizens Campus Park, where green trees are pleasant. The Meguro Persimmon Hall is also nearby, allowing you to immerse yourself in work in refined silence. There is also playground equipment for children.
🟢 Midorigaoka Library + Jiyugaoka Green Road and Pool
Located inside a community center adjacent to the Seibu District Pool, past the stylish Green Road in Jiyugaoka. If you get stuck on your work, you can refresh yourself with a swim in the pool, and the location is excellent for shopping or enjoying a luxurious lunch in Jiyugaoka before or after work.
🟢 Moriya Library + Meguro Ward Office Central District Pool
Located in a quiet residential area of Yutenji, the Meguro Ward Office Central District Pool is right nearby. You can also do hopping here by "working + swimming" to cool your head.
