A Writing Lecture That Moved My Heart: The Night I Couldn't Sleep from Excitement
The "Writing Lecture" I attended yesterday was, without a doubt, a night where "something" shifted significantly within me.
The lecturer was Ratta-san.
Truth be told, I have bought almost all the content he has released, and my writing is rooted in his knowledge.
Brain, note, Kindle. Everything is content that exceeds expectations. I am shocked every single time. I attended this lecture with excitement as well.
A few minutes after his words began to flow over Zoom, something deep inside my heart clicked and started to turn.
・Writing is for "conveying emotions"
・Write with the understanding that "the other person does not want to read your writing"
・Collect words that have moved your own heart
Each and every word seemed to overturn my values regarding "writing." Even though I was hearing it with my ears, it felt as if he were speaking directly to the center of my chest.
His wealth of knowledge is overwhelming, and words flow out of him effortlessly. I also felt the confidence that comes from having accumulated an overwhelming amount of time and successful experiences. Just how much time has he spent on writing...?
By the time the hour-long lecture ended, my head felt as hot as if I had run a full marathon. Usually, I would just think, "Hmm, that was a good talk," and go to sleep, but last night was different.
I got into bed and closed my eyes. But inside my head, the words, examples, and frameworks for moving emotions that came up during the lecture were spinning around and around.
"Ah. I could have put more emotion into that Kindle book..."
"In that part, I missed the perspective of 'moving' the reader's heart."
I just couldn't sleep.
The more I thought, "I have to sleep soon," the higher my heart rate climbed. I wanted to sleep a little more, but I couldn't.
"I have a baseball game all day tomorrow starting in the morning."
Even though I told myself that, for some reason, my brain remained wide awake.
In the end, I didn't fall asleep until after 10:30 PM. I woke up at 3:30 AM. Only five hours of sleep. But when I woke up, I felt surprisingly refreshed.
No, to be precise, my body was heavy. My eyelids hurt a little, and despite it being before a game, my back felt sluggish. But my heart was as clear as a cloudless sky.
"Is this what 'happy sleep deprivation' feels like?" I thought.
There are many kinds of sleep deprivation in this world. Days when you couldn't get enough sleep because you were too busy, days when you stayed up too late having fun, or anxious nights when you just couldn't sleep. You feel some regret the next day for all of them.
But last night's sleep deprivation was different. My heart was filled with learning, excitement, and anticipation for the "me who will write from now on."
Even though I'm sleep-deprived, for some reason I'm energetic. Even though I'm tired, I'm full of motivation. This is a rather special feeling.
Come to think of it, these "moments when I change significantly" usually come unexpectedly. A lecture I signed up for casually, an event I peeked into, a book I opened on a whim. These things sometimes become the triggers that move one's life.
The words the lecturer said at the end of the session have stayed in my mind ever since.
“The perfection of a piece of writing is proportional to the number of characters you delete.”
Right now, my heart is undoubtedly moved. As proof, I am writing this at 4:00 AM before my baseball game. I feel sleepy, yet deep down, the desire to 'write more' and 'convey more' is quietly burning.
I feel sleepy, yet deep down, the desire to 'write more' and 'convey more' is quietly burning.
Today's baseball game might be physically tough.
I might even run out of steam halfway through.
But my heart is fuller than anyone else's right now.
I want to write. No, I can't help but write.
When your heart is moved, your actions are moved as well.
I have learned once again what is most important for a writer.
I want to continue writing pieces that move the emotions and actions of others.
And I want to carefully weave my own unique words, one by one.
A mindset I want to cherish precisely because we are in the age of AI.
I have a feeling that my writing skills will accelerate from here on out.
I really feel that way.
Thank you, Ratta-san.
